Hot Temps on P4 540

I just put together a system for a friend with the following parts:

P4 540 3.4GHz
Intel D915PBL
Zalman 7000A
AS5
Lian Li PC-65B
2 x 512MB Crucual DDR2
Seagate 120GB SATA
NeoPower

Idle temps are pretty good at around 45C, but when I run Prime95, they get up to 65C or higher. This is with the case open and all the fans, and the Zalman running full blast at 12v. This seems kinda high since my system stays at about 63C load and it's a 560J overclocked to 3.9GHz with a XP120.

Ideas? I'm thinking of sticking the stock cooler on it to see if that makes a difference.
 
The XP-120 is a superior cooler to the Aluminum Zalman 7000. Not sure what effect the stock cooler will have. Depending on how perfect you put on the AS5, it might be better, but it surely will be louder.

Don't the "J" models throttle at high temps? (talking about your computer, not your friend's)
 
well I just put a fresh coat of AS5 on it and double checked everything to make sure it's good and snug
put everything in the case and closed it up
ran Prime95 and temps got to 71C before I turned it off :eek:
 
Did you check to see if the fan is working on the HSF? I had a similar problem previously with my 540 (DO stepping) CPU ----reported as high as 70C after checking the BIOS. Temperatures went down dramatically after I fixed the problem with the procedure below:

I would check to see if AS5 and the heatsink is properly installed . Reclean the CPU and HSF's thermal surface with 90% Isopropyl alcohol/lint-free cloth. I would assume its the amount of paste between the CPU and heatsink. At first I was tempted to use more than the recommended amount. Thicker paste gave me the high 70C. After I convinced myself to use lesser paste, that's when I ended up with 38C idle, and eventually to 33-35C after the compund settled in (also depending on room temperature). Good Luck.
