Hot Swapping With RAID Mode

Short answer: no.

Long answer:
Hotswapping and RAID is not recommended unless you swap the whole array at once.

Any RAID array will immediately rebuild the array if you remove one of the disks, hot swappable or not.
Also, FakeRAID under Windows and any other OS will show the drive as a single array, so swapping a single drive is not possible without degrading or destroying the array.

Even with software RAID this is not possible, even with the individual drives being shown.

It is possible, but the risk of destroying data would be very great.


Also, why would you want to setup a RAID array on eSATA?
If you really want to do this, get an external HDD enclosure which supports multiple HDDs in RAID.
It would be a much safer route.
 
I was talking about having the BIOS set to 'RAID' mode (as opposed to 'AHCI' or 'IDE'), and hotswapping additional drives that aren't part of the RAID array.
Of course that would be fine as a RAID setting enables AHCI which includes Hot-Swap.
