Horrible Notebook Gaming Performance

Understood Lopo. You're a good guy. I've seen you here for a while. I just am saying it does the guy disservice because it's HIS thread to help HIM. Not become free for all for people to argue. I understand when others set people off, but maybe it would be better to limit it to pm'ing them rather than have this poor guy scroll through ALOT of useless stuff to him just to get his answer. That's all...I still say everyone stay [H]ard...

Yeah, i've been doing some more reading. DTR's are more of a PC/Laptop hybrid. Not a real laptop. It really is a PC in suitcase, not something you can really carry around like the real thing. I wouldn't even call them laptops o_O

So basically, DTR's are laptops that took out everything that is what defines a laptop to keep up with a PC. I can see some applications for this. If i were living in a camper i'd want one. But not something i would replace a desktop with. It costs nearly four times more than a PC with higher specs.

Ah well. I think the laptops i was referring to were notebooks. The same as winhqwebmstr's (atleast that's what it says on ATI's site). I yield.

Haven't had an argument in a while ^_^ Maybe i should start getting involved again, i'll give you a good debate next time.

Sorry winhqwebmstr =)

Very well. You're right, and I should follow my own advice. One last response and I'm unsubscribing.

I carry mine around every day :p Some of them are more portable than others, you can get one at any level of power/portability/etc. I use mine mainly because I want the power of my desktop in a single, portable package I can take with me. I use it every day, on battery and off, everywhere I go. I can do anything on it I can do at home. Here they're not as bad, they're more pricey overseas.

Yeah, notebooks and subnotebooks were the terms I was searching for. These are DTR, and then you have laptops that are kinda in the middle.

Any time, anywhere! :) I love a spirited discussion!! It's what this place is for! :D

ok first let me add a rollseyes to the following posts

Hehe sorry bro but you wasted your money you should of got one with atleast the new connect to upgrade mobile graphics.... should of got one with a 9700 min or new 9800 mobility.... should of researched before you wasted your money.

I did my research on the the IGP and people said they were able to play games at lower resolutions...I did my research thank you

Thanks to everyone else who gave me their input...and well said operaman

Of course I knew this laptop wasn't going to be a speed demon...but from reviews I read it should be able to play older OpenGL games such as Quake 3. As stated in my first post, I am using the Catalyst drivers. Unfortunately, they are responsible for for horrible FPS drop. With the stock drivers I was able to play RTCW in the 30-40 FPS range at medium settings. Basically this narrows down to me needing the RIGHT driver so I can get this thing working.

And for people saying "Oh it's only a laptop" let me just tell you that I am using this constantly instead of my 3.4GHz P4 machine. It does everything I need except for gaming. For those who essentially told me to get a "real laptop", I never said I wanted to do hardcore gaming on this...

Just an update...I can run q3a at high detail settings @ 1024*768 resolution at a constant 70-90 FPS with the new drivers I just installed...yet ET still runs like crap on the lowest settings...hmm

isnt ET a multiplayer game? could it be your internet connection?

No I was just running around a map connected to local host

looking at the recomended specs for ET you more than meet them.. have you tried updating chipset, video, audio drivers?

don't hate on the mobilty 9000

the nonigp version rules, at least for its time (which was 2 years ago)

i had one in my inspiron 8100 which was a 1 ghz pIII with 512 ram and it tooled RTCW like it was its job.

hell i could play bf1942 @ 1024x768 @ 2x AA and 4x AF just peachy at like 45 fps.

in fact the m9000 can play any game based on the quake 3 engine at 1600x1200 at max settings at a comfortable 60-70 fps. at least in my experience. and its AA performance is way better than the 4200 go that is supposed to be an equivalent card.

therefore in summary:
problem 1: celeron can't game
problem 2: integrated graphics with shared memory cannot game

solution: get a better laptop

Did you not read my recent posts or what?

It's an IGP model...I am not looking for high FPS but I am happy to run UT 2003 and Quake 3 and fairly high details at 50+ FPS

i think quake3 era games might be able to do that, but with teh IGP i dunno if UT2k3 would, the swapping of memory to the RAM is really gonna slow it down, but we can try, right? :)

this is a mobile modding utility for ati mobile units. it will convert a regular catalyst set to work with a mobile chip, give it a shot, and post back

good luck

lol i read your posts i was just stating some facts since i haven't posted in like 100000 days. :p

No prob..I am sure the celeron is locking it down on performance...it's neutered with its 128K cache ;)

This model also comes in a P4-M version maybe I'll look into upgrading down the road

i thought the mobile cellys had 256k?

winhqwebmstr said:
Nope, not this one at least...and I just checked wcpuid

damn, that sucks.. i dont know where i heard 256, in any case it wouldnt matter that much, as netburst+256k still isnt good at all... 128 is just worse ;)
id def look at getting a p4-m.. i know there are some for sale in fs/ft every once in a while

howd that mobile modder work out for ya? (if you tried it)

I'll check it out for sure...I went back to the omega catalyst drivers and I got some increase in performance

Have you tried manually installing the normal ATi drivers?

normal ATi drivers wont install on a mobile chipset, thats why you need that little catalyst modder i linked too

There are ways to force them, you just have to work at it a bit.

wouldnt the catalyst modder be... much easier than doing it yourself?

i mean, thats all it does... mods a regular catalyst set to run with mobiles..

I know this might be a bit OT...but I think a processor upgrade would definitely help. This laptop supports 533MHz busses. (This celeron has a bus of only 400MHz.) Perhaps an increase in bus speed can help those textures flowing between the graphics processor and main memory faster. WCPUID reports the CPU name string as "Intel Celeron CPU 2.80GHz"...so it's most likely a desktop processor. I took apart my notebook and extracted the CPU and it has no engraving on it.

Was thinking of either of these:

I don't know, haven't used it :p Just curious. Suggesting anything I can think of.
