how does one go about doing it?

are there extra components one needs to buy? Only certain laptops have the ability?

thanks

An LCD monitor? Most laptops have a d-sub (blue VGA) output that will connect to most LCD panels as long as it has a d-sub connection. Most of them still have d-sub and DVI connections.

Most can/do - except for some ultra small form factors. Even then it could with the external base.

Once hooked up, depending on your graphics card, you can do an extended desktop or simply clone your laptop screen.
