Hey guys. I am not so good when it come to audio, but, is there a way (with out opening up the subs) to hook two z-5500 subs together? Would I just need some sort of channel changer? Amp? What would I need to get to make this happen?

I don't believe this is possible as the sub is connected via the D-Sub connector tor the "Control Center", I've seen two complete Z-5500 systems run together, although just pairing the subs would likely requiring opening at least one of the units to grab the leads you'll need to make this happen

Ah ok, I was just trying to see if there was some sort of channel changer or adapter that I could hook both D-Subs into one out put. So basically the "control centers" would be hooked together, but the main one would be hooked into the sub that had the satellite speakers hooked in it. Or maybe even hook them together with an optical cable.

would be impossible to do either of those scenarios ;)

So what sound system would you recommend that would be 5.1, or 5.2 that I can use for both my PC or TV? I just want something good really. Clean sound.

I suggest two pairs of Martin Logan Summit X, Martin Logan Stage, and two Martin Logan Descent I. It's good and clean.

troll posting is bitchin awesome  (for clarification: I kid)

as far as a 5.1 setup for your PC/TV, whats the issue with the Z-5500's currently? (I assume you already own at least one set?)

Though a little out of his price range, I can't consider that a troll posting. I mean he gave very little basis as to a price range with his comment.

Since you are talking about 2 z-5500s, have you thought about a real 5.1 system? You are steadily approaching that pricepoint. Do you have 1 set of Z-5500's right now?

Yes I have a set right now. There is no issue at all. They are awesome I think. I was looking at getting another set for my new TV. I just saw a video on YouTube of some dude hooking up two Subs, so I thought that would be cool to try out, and I think I may have found a way to do just that. I'll have to keep this thread up to date or start a new one when I am done experimenting.

Yes, See above post.

I think if you open the "slave" subwoofer and find the lead that acts as the subwoofer input (it'll be a +/- for the sub amp) and pass that to the D-Sub's Sub PreOut line (you'll have to copy the same line that goes to the "master" sub)

this should work, but of course, you could kill some equipment this way (if you feed one amp into the other accidentally, for example, this would be hard to do, but is possible, just keep it in the back of your head while you're hacking :))

one thing I'd have to ask though, if you're buying a second set (first of all, why do you need the 2nd set? afaik the Z-5500 has like 3 inputs right?), why hook 'em together like this?

Why hook em' together? Meh, I saw it done, and it looked and sounded cool.

Why get a second set? The second set will go on my new TV, the satellite speakers will be mounted on the wall and ceiling around the TV area. The other set (the one that is hooked up to my PC) the speakers just chill out on my desk (I have an L-Shaped corner desk). I am also thinking about getting some stands for the rear speakers so I can have them behind me more when I am at my desk.:D

you can get both sets together in their entirety, you just need some splitters if you're using analog, or connect one via digital and the other via analog, or various other combos

but this will be 100% mirror of 5.1 to two sets, and if they're in different locations, that'll really mess up the surround experience (doesn't matter what speakers you used, would really toy with it)

This is exactly what I had in mind. I was gonna go get 3 Y-Splitters from BestBuy. Of course, I would not hook the satellite speakers up to the second sub, so it would only be tons of bass.:cool: I also like this idea because I don't have to mess with cutting wires or anything so, I can still keep the bass around for the TV setup.:D

Buying two Z-5500 sounds like a very bad investment, even a single Z-5500 is bad enough.

This is akin to running two GF 6600 GT in SLI alongside your i7 940 if you ask me... But whatever floats your boat. (yes I wrote 6600, not a typo)

problem is the center channel goes over the same line as the sub, so you'll have to bypass that with your wiring (its possible, just keep it in mind)

I'm really amazed how anti-constructive people get, just because they don't like your equipment *sigh*

I think the Z-5500 are fine for a very small limited niche market, nothing wrong with them in that sense, though a lot of people will certainly "grow out of them" once they hear something better... That being said, I do think there's plenty wrong w/the frankenstein setup he's trying to assemble or with purchasing a second set of Z-5500's with that in mind. /shrug It's just not worth it, at all.

I am well aware they are not the best, I never said they were. At the same time, I don't want to pay 15K for some crazy-ass Bose home theater. Although that would be awesome. I am not wanting to pay $300.00 per speaker for a 5.1 setup ... Sorry, sound isn't that big for me.

See this is why we bash Logitech buyers who think they are good speakers. In your mind, Bose is a good company when in fact they make complete shit aswell. Ask ANYONE who knows anything about sound.

Marketing. Marketing. Marketing.

Bose and Logicrap have you believing they make a good product and you just proved to us that you believe it with that Bose comment.

The only people that like Bose products also read Consumer Reports for their reviews...

And the comment about the price.:mad::mad::mad:

It has been show OVER AND OVER again on this forum that better sound is available for LESS or equal money than the crappy plastic Z5500's.

/rant

Either you exaggerated a lot, or there's a world of options out there (literally) that you're not aware of. Most audiophiles, hell anyone who's done research and values bang for the buck, knows full well that most Bose stuff is very very overpriced for what you get... And it's hardly the cusp of audio quality either. There's plenty of better sounding stuff out there for way less, and there's plenty of setups that costs the same as a set of Z-5500 typically does (or $50-100 more at best) and will also put them to shame (while being much easier to upgrade as well). I honestly encourage you to do some research if you really value your $. /shrug

Again, where in my post did I say, "OMG Logitech z-5500 is teh best!!!!111 OMG THEY ARE SO AWESOME!!!!"? I made it clear I know there are better options, I may not know what the prices are (god forbid some one didn't know the exact price of every product out on the market). Ok, so we all know it's not the best, now then recommend something better for around the same price then please.

I started this thread looking for advice, not a crap-storm so if that is what will happen then please start your own thread.

Thanks.:D

Like I said, it was a rant. The Bose comment sent me over the edge, my apologies.

Ok so getting back on track. Can you make some suggestions to a better 5.1 system for my PC and TV that is around the same price range? That's what I want, something as good as I can get for $300.00 - $500.00.

Well, it seems your mind is set on doing this frankenstein setup, so I suppose we can´t really talk you out of doing it, no matter how much we bash logitech or bose.

I hope it works out for you and that you enjoy it, but seriously, think it through and you´ll see it´s a waste of time and money. I believe the audiophiles here will share the same honest opinion that I have about this.

well, if I told you you're a stupid moron and slave to marketing and you don't know shit and your opinion of decent is shit and what you own is shit and you have no clue at all and the reason we bash "your kind" is because you're a moron and "anyone" knows better...

...how open to listening to my suggestions are you gonna be? :p

I agree, Bose's (that sounds weird) home theatre stuff is overpriced, and I wouldn't personally buy it, but big whoop, I also think a Corvette is overpriced and I wouldn't buy that either, although you don't see me telling Corvette owners that they're morons and inferior just for liking something different than me, what does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? (in other words, why does this get under anyone's skin? it doesn't matter.)

to the OP, at ~$250 (am I tripping or did the 5500's actually drop another $10 on amazon in the last few days?) you probably won't replace the Z-5500 and still have an amplifier, at least not with anything thats "head and shoulders" above and sitll giving you 5.1

although, at $300-$400, theres a number of package solutions from Onkyo and harman/kardon that will probably be more appealing (you'll gain more input features, a better remote, and arguably better speakers, in addition to more expandibility/flexibility), this doesn't mean the 5500's are a "massive waste of time and money", theres probably just some more, tweakable, options out there :)

I am open to anything that will blow my windows out...

I am looking at the set you liked to. I found a set with an optical cable in Amazon for $340.00 I think it was. May get those.

They will not blow the windows out. FYI. :p

It seems you took it the wrong way, I suppose I can´t blame anyone, it´s simple text after all. The thing is, I did not mean to say that he is stupid or anything, it´s just that in my opinion, he can achieve a better result spending his time and money over something else other than these "pc speakers". It is my intention to help out, I may not know what´s gonna blow his windows out, but I can at least tell him to focus on something that will most likely grant him a better result (specially when other folks have done the same).

This is in line with what I had mind (except for the "waste of time" part, ha :D)

well op, you can with this cable. just hook everything up and leave the wires out for speaker set two.

btw z-5500 at 200 and below is not for a small niche market, its the 400 and up systems that are and the fact that they're (z5500) everywhere shows that. the logi is great for people that are interested in 5.1 but dont have the capital to go all out. i mean for the price i got it at ($150), its great for when friends and family are over and the z5500 provides the loud surround sounds, and loud bass they want. when theyre all gone i just pop on my headphones anyways and yes i am aware you can have a really awesome bookshelf speaker set up for around 200 dollars but some people just like the "bullet flying pass your head" experience. unless you can hear the unclear mids and muddy bass yourself, there no real reason to upgrade.

if you have a spare set from rma and want to burn $40 go for the cable. if you have one set and are planning to buy a second set for this purpose... don't its a terrible idea. i personally would either leave it alone, or buy a new pod on ebay and give it to someone.

To clarify, I said they're a product that's only good for a small niche market because, as you stated, they're mostly good for those that care only about having the absolute cheapest surround sound experience they can get (at the cost of sound quality), and then that's only viable if they manage to find 'em on sale or on Ebay for cheap...

Last I saw they were still selling for anywhere from $270 to $300 at most major e-tailers (Amazon, Newegg, etc.), at which point they're a rip-off. I agree that they're a decent deal for $150-200 (tops) if you just want something loud for gaming or you simply can't spend any more for a movie setup (or don't have the space for a receiver, college students, etc.), for everyone else there's simply far better options for the money.

I never crapped on the OP for owning and liking his Z-5500, I did say it was dumb to buy an entirely new set just for this crazy idea though.

Edit: Ugh, forget Ebay even, I saw one or two Z-5500 sets there with the Buy it Now option at around $200 but the other two dozen or so were mostly at $300+ if not $400+ (which is not just a ripoff, but a huge ripoff).

i definitely agree, i would not pay any where near 270 for the set and if it wasnt for the ridiculous sale that dell had along time ago i wouldnt have mine.
