You can use 3TB drives in the QNAP too.

I would get the QNAP as WHS is outdated, and the new WHS doesnt have DE.

Noob question again.

DE?

i'm allso looking at the power and from what i can read the acer use less the the QNAP.

How hard is it to use the QNAP OS compaired to WHS?

Yeah i know WHS11 is commeing soon and i was hopeing for a discount on it if i buy the other one now,

DE (Drive Extender) it takes all your disk and makes a storage pool, so you have one large amount of storage. The new version doesnt have this.

You arent going to get a discount because you bought an old model. Dont kid yourself.

yeah your right i guess.. i just like the setup on WHS looks so easy so even a noob like me will get it to work..

I will be useing them as JBOD sins i dont know when i will get all the disk i will just get them as i need them.

the way its setup are they hot-swap?

there is nothing wrong with still using WHSv1

with intel nics i can hit 80MB/s+ through my gigabit network.. i can't imagine a nas doing that

Get the QNAP. It's essentially an Ubuntu/Debian atom WHS. Only way the fuck better.

That's exactly how it was supposed to be and if I can do it anyone can do it. :D

I still don't understand 99% of server technology but I've muddled thru a few problems by reading the WHS forums and asking questions.

ok now i'm even more confused...

Mind telling me the biggest diffrence in the 2 there?

in OS and transfer speed and so one?

for and against?

and which one will work best with my popcorn hour?

WHS 2011 (or whatever its going by these days) wont run on the Acer. It doesn't meet the hardware requirements last I heard.

well that kinda blows that idea out the window.

Can some one explane about out how the Qnap OS works? or might have some SS laying around?

kind of a bummer, but at the same time its not really a big deal. If it does what you need it to then there is no reason to upgrade.

Where the hell did you read/hear that the WD Green drives are designed only to run 8 hours a day? That sounds like bullshit to me.

Thx Danny that was my first words as well!

But then let me ask this way will u say its a good HDD for trow in that Qnap thing?

and on a side note how mouch can i expect to move in mb/s ?? was hopeing for 65+ think i can do that?

I would get the QNAP as WHS is outdated

Outdated how? Our WHS (running an array of software) supports a PS3 and WDTV Live Plus with a ton of online and local content. I can't imagine a QNAP providing the same experience.

QNAP comes with tons of software and can do just about anything a home user would want.
WHS v1 is still a good option, but its kind of like buying a new computer with XP, whats the point?

WHS v1 is going to be EOL in 2 years, and isnt really going to be supported once Vail hits the shelves. Dont expect any major updates (PP*) you will just get the standard server2003 code updates.

Personally i would rather run WHSv2, but until some DE replacements are prime time, i dont think its a really good option either.

Thus i suggested the QNAP

no one answered my question :(

what kinda speed can i get out of this thing?

can i get 60+ mb/s when moveing iso's and stuff like it?

from what i can read most u of guys say the Qnap is the best one.

Not sure of which of the two you asking, but the i own a similar model than the one you looking on the acer, H342 main difference is a atom 510, usually i get around 50 to 60 mg/s.

On the Qnap idk, but according to QNAP TS-410 Turbo NAS Review its around 50 mg/s. If you wish for 60+ then look into the 419, but its more expensive and at that price range i would also consider Synology DiskStation 4-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS411+ (Black) which has really good transfer rates, check smallnetbuilder nas charts. I also own a Synology 111, which been really good, the setup much easier to setup and transfers are similar to the acer, much more responsive, but sadly i do need the WHS because of certain apps that are only windows based, but if you dont windows, i would go with synology for a prebuild.
