home server power supply

So i finally put my home server together (admittedly running xp pro x64 because windows home server hates vista 64 ><). I am having what i think to be power troubles, i had one of those ultra v-series 500w supplies in the case, and it seemed to give me problems pushing 6 hard drives. I think i may need something with a better reputation and a little stronger. so my question is whats the best way to go on a budget. This thing is put together out of extra parts i had in my house, i am not looking to break the bank with a psu, just something that can hold up without exploding or browning out.

my server specs:
6-8 hard drives
gigabyte k8ns pro
a64 3400+
2gb ram
geforce 5700

thats all i have in there, what was happening is i would be unable to boot with all the drives connected, or it would just lock up randomly in windows. if i take out all the drives but the boot drive it works more or less ok... All the hard drives being used are older but confirmed to be in perfect working order in 2 of my other pcs and the board/proccy was my htpc for a looong time before i moved to a dual core htpc
 
Might be just the Ultra-V. I ran a similar setup with an Ultra X-Finity 500W without troubles.
 
i figured that one. Just wanted to make sure i didn't overlook something

any ideas what to snag, i was checking out the cooler master at microcenter, also considered the corsair 550w since every other psu in the house is corsair, but i'm being cheap at the moment
 
Sounds odd to me. Thats not many drives that you are pushing on there. Perhaps you just got a dud.

However, I am a little puzzled by this statement: "all the drives but the boot drive it works more or less ok... " So does it work with all the drives removed?
 
sorry was typing and had like 4 groupwise emails about a server issue so I lost focus in what i was typing.

If i remove all drives except for my boot drive it boots up fine. For the most part anyway, a windows update failed so it can act a bit odd. but otherwise runs normally. If i add more than 1 extra drive it starts having strange locking or booting issues.
 
Hmm. Could you test your theory with a replacement or temporary power supply?
 
going to try that today when i get home, i'll report back when i have a more concrete answer
 
It has 34A on the +12V rail. Should be more than enough for your system.
All you need high-current on the 12V rail for is just the startup surge anyway (about a 10ms bump from 2-3A depending on the drive model IINM). Quiescent current demand is a lot lower.
