Home Network Issue?

Hey there Gurus,

After trying for about the last 2 hours I have given up and will ask for help.

I have a home network of two desktops and a laptop. The laptop connects to my router while the desktops are connected through Cat6.

All the computers are running Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit

Desktop 1 has all my media.

From Desktop 1 I can see in my network Desktop 2. I can copy files from Desktop 2 to Desktop 1 at Gigabit speeds. However when copying files from Desktop 1 to Desktop 2 I get "Calculating" for speed for large files or something pitiful like 15 KBs for small files.

Where this gets wierd is I can't ping my laptop from either desktop. However, I can ping and copy files from Desktop 1 and 2 to my laptop. When I copy files from Desktop 1 I again get the 'Calculating" / slow speeds. From Desktop 2 I get a faster transfer(though not Gigabit since it is a wireless connection).

Long story short, since Desktop 1 is where my media is housed, how or what settings do I need to change to allow for the faster transfer rate to my laptop so I can stream my ripped movie files.

Thanks for any help in advance!

The only other information I can think to post off the top of my head is while looking at the network on my Laptop I can't see either desktop. I have to manually enter there names in the address bar to get to them. Where as my desktops can see each other when looking at the network.

What networking devices do you own, and what are the LAN IP addresses of all of your devices.

Desktop 1: 192.168.1.111
Desktop 2: 192.168.1.119
Laptop: 192.168.1.112

Router is a Cisco Linksys E3000

I know you said this " The laptop connects to my router while the desktops are connected through Cat6.", but all three computers connect to the same router right? They are all on the same network/LAN?

To answer 1 of your questions...
Where this gets wierd is I can't ping my laptop from either desktop. However, I can ping and copy files from Desktop 1 and 2 to my laptop.

Almost guaranteed that this phenomenon is related to windows firewall. Disable the Windows firewall to see if you can ping your laptop.

Instructions to allow Pings via windows firewall:
http://www.ucs.cam.ac.uk/docs/faq/windows/m8

Does using the Credential Manager control panel to "Add a Windows Credential" for each of the other two computers (do this for all 3) help?

Try following the instructions from this web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/organization/wirelesssetup.aspx
It does not sound like your network is setup correctly with the right names or credentials. You should be able to see and ping both of the other computers from any computer on your network. Something is wrong at a basic level. I would suggest starting over with the details from that web site.
