Hogwarts Legacy

It's kinda weird that nobody cares that you're an absolute stone cold killer

While other chumps are studying how to flick their wand at a quarter degree different angle, you're out literally reducing motherfuckers to a red mist and casting the darkest of forbidden spells as you wrench the soul from their body

Like I just transmuted a man into a barrel and exploded him

His friend watched that happen, probably got hit with some wood splinters that were effectively the person he was talking to not 30 seconds prior

That's pretty hardcore

Then you go flinging those spells around in Hogwarts, in front of a teacher, and the biggest response is that they basically tell you it's bad

Sorry I couldn't hear you over the sound of all these goblin bodies hitting the floor

Just picked this up on a Steam sale, I have about five hours deep into it, and I got some thoughts. After coming off the Cyberpunk DLC I am not certain how I feel about this game.

On one hand I get this is rated 'T' for teens and if I were, at any level, a Potterverse fanboi this may do something more for me, but it all seems super shallow of a game. Crazy broad with a million fetch side quests, but just shallow in actual depth. It's starting to feel like a more dressed up version of one of the Lego RPGs like LOTR or Hobbit. Bite sized tasks, minimal fuss, low chance of failure, and some sort of reward I don't care for after.

There's also a number of emersion breaking interactions as I play. Day/night cycles only mean squat for background NPCs, some buggy triggered text, the lack of any impact for my actions, and an insane fast travel map.

Heck for a large chunk my character had masks like the two left children, crazy hats, jacked up cloths, and was absolutely looting anything not locked down and spam casting the reveal spell. No one cared I looked like an ADHD twitchy serial killer loot goblin so that's.. odd. Though once I figured out I can make gear invisible that course corrected things a bit.

Also, and maybe it's the systems orientated programmer in me, but this game really shows the McGuffin level patch that is magic in the Potterverse. The movies always made it seem fairly nonsensical, and this just is hammering that point.

Oh well. The main story line is interesting enough to continue and I am not having high hopes for the game to get any more complex than it already is.
stick to the main story line. there are way too many fetch quests with zero worthwhile reward. but it was still a fun game.

Agreed. I am a'stealn and a'murdern at the ripe age of 15(?) and folk are just like "Whelp, there go that cheeky brand new 5th year! I bet their spells are just beginners luck. I can't wait to beat him at broomstick racing." As I steal gold, loot chests, and rain down various enemy parts around me.

I swear there's a class paper to be written with parallels made to like A Clockwork Orange.

Also, what's up with all the cats and the "press x to pet"? From my only movie-deep Potterverse knowledge isn't there a good chance some of those are just people pretending to be cats?

I did everything possible as far as storyline & quests went but I avoided most of the excessive Merlin's Trials & other boring stuff. I found it hilarious to be at or better than Voldemort's & Dumbledore's levels of power. Its essentially canon breaking since there's never any mention of said MC in the future unless he or she were completely wiped from records like a gov't black ops project.

It turns out to be a complex simulation of some fourth year hogwarts student applying the latest OpenAI LLM with a fist full of spices and herbs, and the spell "Stackus Overloweo Furca". 13th Floor style.

You think Hogwarts wants to be known for this kid??

Belongs on a watch list, not Hogwarts honor roll

Not surprised the prestigious school can't find record of the child butcher with a body count of legends

MC is almost an analogy for young power hungry Grindewald.

Coincidentally, Jack the Ripper was active just a couple of years before our little psychopath was enrolled

HMMM

There it is for you... JtR is the MC's father & JtR is a dark wizard. Also, there's no future mention of the evil goblin lord who wanted to destroy everything in English Wizardom.

100% agree, and unfortunately they don't make it clear but you CAN change your look anyway you'd like, with any equipment. I don't remember the steps anymore but you customize the gear to look like something else.

Too simple, too many fetches, awful rewards. I guess newer gamers that haven't been burned out on another fetcher or big HP fans might love it. The power creep is hilarious though.

I'll probably play it since I enjoyed the world & magic overall.
I'd say it is worth it. As other have pointed out, it isn't something that can really be taken as "canon" in the universe since it does some silly things like let you use unforgivable curses with no penalty. Of course, the whole Harry Potter universe is full of contradictions and so on, it is a fun universe, not one with literal encyclopedias of backstory like LOTR.

It's not a perfect game, but it is fun and capture the feeling of playing wizard quite well. I enjoyed my playtime of it.

Good HDR too, if you have an HDR screen.

It being the DLC for clarity on my last post. I'd have loved to play the main game with HDR, but I think only gamescope & Valve kernel builds automatically allow such on Linux. Once the DLC releases, I'll have to see what everyone is saying about it before taking a dive in. I'm definitely wanting to play more though, so I hope the new content doesn't disappoint.

I'm glad they're going back for a "Director's Cut / Definitive Edition" with apparently some expansion stuff as DLC. I admit I'd like to see more, pretty much everything in the video modi123 linked, but really hope that its not just a single new quest or something - I'd not expect a Ghost of Tsushima level Iki Island necessarily, but I hope its substantive as well as overhauling the minigames, events, and sidequests in the main title. Companions, morality systems etc.. would all be big steps in the right direction, along with other decisions to make.. As some were discussing earlier, yes this takes place years prior to other Wizarding World content by means of being vaguely Victorian as I recall, but stil having a kid going around casting Unforgivalble Curses in sight of random people isn't great for immersion. True faction systems and alignment would be preferable (and could overlap with the House Points - something only visibly signified in game so far. It would be nice if players impact or lack thereof could hve an effect on their House and what happens throughout an by the en of the year), if nothing else adding some sort of vaguely Assassin's Creed Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla style "bounty hunter" system, seems doable where there are everything from other students who want to bully and/or stop you from bullying, prefects/head boy/girl student leaders, teachers, or even Aurors get called on you depending on your behavior.

There were so many places where things were cut for time and other content from what I read, so restoring a lot of intended stuff to make it feel more like a classic Harry Potter game mixed with Rockstar's Bully Scholarship Edition or Persona 3/4/5, as opposed to just an open world title without a lot of the "school life" elements, would help. In the past, I heard that there were some pretty comprehensive mods that gave NPCs schedules that were closer to RDR2 an otherwise made sense, which allowed further mods based upon them such as Prefects and Teachers monitoring off-limits areas during different times of day or night etc. There's a lot more that can be done with an official expansion to these systems and I hope WB/Portkey takes the time to do so. After all, they spent so much time on embarassing duds like Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League they hopefuly have realized that resources can be spent elsewhere but if they're going to get back some degree of community support, they need to make it worthwhile.

I have to wonder if they would save those factors and mechanics for HwL2.

This week, as reported by Variety, Warner Bros president of interactive entertainment, David Haddad, stated that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is a “very big priority.” However, unlike the first game which is set in the 1890s, the sequel could have a modern setting to fall in line with the upcoming TV series from HBO.

This is 75% off on Steam or something so I grabbed it. I'm like 5 min in... is there no way to do inverted mouse when looking around? This is brutal!
Nevermind, it's not under the mouse icon, it's under the controller with a gear icon, even though I'm using a mouse. Love this trend of getting rid of labels for everything.

Anyways, this game is $15! Seems pretty sweet so far.

I got a steam key the other day from greenmangaming for $12.50, myself. Thanks for the tip on inverting the mouselook!

game was fantastic at full price, an even better one at that discounted rate... beautiful game

Is this a bug or just confusing UI or what? Every time I have an alert ! on inventory, and it's for quest items, when I go to that section, it's blank. It's always blank. Everything else seems to be working fine. I'm level 10 and have visited and left Hogsmeade so far.

I am shocked by the performance, I jacked everything to ultra, no fsr, 1440 rez, vsync 60, with RT on. it looks amazing, the lighting is great. taking it slow looking around. So far so good, maybe later it gets more taxing outdoors.

It doesn't. The initial launch had a bunch of issues with the interior of Hogwarts bogging fps down, but I think they fixed that.

After the large summer patch there was some issues with texture filling outside.. like re-drawing the grass was slow sometimes.. but hopefully that's fixed now too. I need to get back to this game - it is very well done and it looks gorgeous.

The amount of big boobed nude mods may break the internet. Gotta turn all those skeezy LiveJournal smexy fanfic stories in to reality!

a curated in-game mod manager then you can kiss your lewd mods goodbye.
I would believe if there's a will there's a way. The interwebz will manage to backdoor in some lewd mods one way or another. Just a few inches of progress over a little bit of time.
