So I just put together the following:

Antec P183
Asus P6X58D
i7 920
TRUE 120 with a single Noctua NF-P12 in push configuration.
Shin-Etsu X23-7783D
I have Noctua NF-P12 fans throughout the case.

Waiting on my copy of Win 7 Ultimate to get here, so I'm going on bios temps.

I obviously can't load the cpu, but my idle temp in the bios is 37.5-38.5, all the time.

That sounds like what people are getting on load temps!!

What gives?

EDIT - I just noticed in the bios, the cpu voltage looks to be 1.160. Is that stock? That sounds high also. I'll add I haven't changed anything at all.

lol those temps are perfectly normal.. if you really think thats what the load temps are for that processor you must be reading the wrong shit.. because the avg load temp on an i7 920 at stock clocks is between 65-75C.. stock clocks with that heatsink.. maybe the mid 50's to mid 60's.. just wait til you start overclocking.. then you will understand..

honestly if you keep thinking all that stuff is high including the voltage.. then you need to do a lot more reading up on that processor.. because you obviously dont know any of the numbers for it.. im not trying to be an ass here.. but you really need to do your own research before assuming stuff is high or low and find the hard facts.. there are tons and tons of reviews on the i7 920 with all the numbers you need to know.. there are heatsink reviews on this forum that talk about the heatsink you have and what temps you should be getting.. the information is there.. you just need to look for it..
 
Perhaps. The temps I was going by were temps from tests done in the i7 HS roundup done here. Looked like 27 was the norm for the TRUE 120, and high 30's was the load.

Sooooo, any explanation on that part? I'm all ears. I also read a bunch of people here having their vcore at 1.05ish. That's why I was curious about the 1.160.
 
27C Idle is basically IMPOSSIBLE on air (unless you're freezing). Even on Water it is a HUGE stretch. I don't know what you're thinking of.

Think about tt:
1) The BIOs isn't exactly an accurate temperature measurement tool.
2) Your ambient temps is different from that of the tester's ambient temps
3) You're using the BIOs to measure the temps. As said earlier, not always accurate and the fact that testers use actual software or some sort of hardware to monitor the temperatures.

So in other words, there's a ton of factors involved.

If we're talking about 70F ambient, (21C), the best air can do with a stock i7, idle, speed step (that means it's running less than 1V and probably in the 1ghz range) - the best air coolers can do is 30C on the hottest core. Maybe one or two degrees lower. Maybe.

That's um Megahalem, D14, Venmous X etc territory. With excellent fans and push/pull.

You haven't posted your CORE temps yet. I'm betting they are between 35 and 40C on low power usage.

One more question....on this TRUE 120, I have revision C.

The two mounting screws with the springs....are you supposed to tighten those down until you can't tighten them down anymore? Or just until it feels snug as can be? Reason I'm asking is there are come components directly underneath one of the brackets and I wouldn't want to screw into them.

I actually just took the TRUE off and remounted it.

Temp is 31 in bios now. Weird.

Your focus is on the wrong temps. Your CPU is never idle when your using it and full CPU load are the important ones. Keep it under 80c from what I've read.
 
BIOS temperatures are meaningless since they are measured with a sensor on the motherboard. The only somewhat reliable way to monitor CPU temperatures are by using a program like Core Temp or Real Temp to take temperature data from the sensors built into the CPU itself. Also, due to the way the sensors are calibrated, the closer the temperature is to Tjmax (100C for your CPU), the more accurate the readings will be. So idle temperatures will in general be quite inaccurate, which is one of the reasons you should only consider load temps.
