Ok so I just recently picked up the book 1984, and i started reading it and there are so many similarities between this book and HL2. Is there any way that teh game might have been based off the book or something like that, because the "blue uniform" seems alot like the blue jumpsuits they wear in HL2 and the "evil gorilla faced guards armed with truncheons" sounds alot like the combine...

P.S. its an aweosme book btw...

1984 is a dystopia and is the basis for many dystopian themes in other works. However, even the city levels in HL2 don't do a good job capturing that atmosphere, in my opinion. There's something missing.

I don't feel quite as desperate and hopeless in HL2,as I would if I were in a 1984 environment ( argument could be made that the Bush administration is bringing that environment to my door step ) But anywho, I think the fact that you actually fight makes HL2 a lot less traumatic that 1984, where they aren't even able to struggle against Big Brother...

I don't think it's meant to be a direct emulation, but yes, lots of people have commented on the "Orwellian" nature of the H-L games. I'm surprised you didn't realise it wasn't entirely original.

Shpongle, nice name. Simon Posford is a musical genius. Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Celtic Cross, and Younger Brother are all great stuff. Sorry, I know this is off topic but I had to say something.

Thanks man  Sphongle is incredible...would love to see them live at some point, although I don't know if that's still possible? I'll have to check out those other artists you listed:p

They rebel by having sex. ;)

The projects I listed were all collaborations with Simon Posford except Hallucinogen which was his solo project. One can only hope Shpongle would play in America but those are high hopes considering the type of music MTV and the radio shove down your throat. They will be playing live in London October 2008.

Pretty much every single piece of dystopian fiction created since 1984 was written(1948 I believe) has ripped it off. Now that you've read the book, get used to seeing all the other "great" pieces of fiction that are really just the same story with a different paint job.

With regards to HL2, the 1984-ripping-off doesn't bother me that much, since the main draw of the story to me is the sci-fi aspect. Fortunately, the episodes are doing a great job of conveying it; I didn't care much for the original HL2 since it felt like a lot of the gameplay was just added as filler.

Half-Life is the aftermath of a catastrophe in a particle physics laboratory in the deserts of the Southwestern United States, 1984 is about a future where the government has come to control virtually everything...

Sorry, I don't see it. Just because they both involve human society going to hell in a hand basket doesn't mean there is any strong links between them.

type 1984 into wikipedia, and start link hopping. open anything interesting in a new tab. great way to waste several hours.

There are certain things in Half Life 2 that are quite similar to the concepts of 1984. However, you are Gordan Freeman and you managed to get out of a government facility starting with only a crowbar. Going against a Big Brother like regime...no big deal compared. :)

We need a age limit to keep these pre-teens who don't know what they are talking about off this forum.

This is one of, if not the stupidest, statement I have seen in a very long time on here.

+10000000000000

It is telling of the posters age. None of these kids learn anything in school anymore, so they have no base of reference on which to deduce anything. They really believe that they live in a fascist police state...

i agree with these republicans, arrest that guy for saying such a thing!

You need to do some research, President Bush hasnt even come close to some of the measures put in place by the democrats at certain points in time...I refer you to the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918....

Those should scare you...

You can tell that HL2 is largely influenced by 1984 as well as other dystopian novels/films.

Take a look at the bulletin boards in City 17, very 1984ish.

QFT

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to respond to that.

So it is better to respond with an even lower blow....think like me or you are wrong? This is about games, not politics. Stop fitting the Republican stereotype, and ignore it, as it is irrelevant to the discussion.

1. different political party.

2. because it was done back then, it makes it ok now?

1. different political party.

2. because it was done back then, it makes it ok now?

1. Irrelevant. your complaining about the republicans, yet the democrats you would have to favor now have done worse...

2. Since it was done and was worse back then, what your bitching about now is nowhere near as bad as it was then. Therefore your whole premise falls apart...

The truth can hit you like a low blow, but it is still truth in the end...

He means they were 'democrats' only in name, it was idealogically a completely different party back then, closer in beliefs to the republican party of today if I'm not mistaken. Maybe we need some way to verify if someone has at least a GED befoe posting

So democrats changed to modern democrats somewhere between Woodrow Wilson and FDR? 12 years is pretty quick for a major shift in ideals.

Can i get a link to this book...? Or an author so i can look it up and find it haha.

When did the thread titled "HL2 = 1984" turn in to a political argument?
Because some people feel as though they are on a platform of righteousness and aren't happy unless they spew political BS. I'd share my own viewpoints, but this isn't the Soapbox area, and I'm not too keen on earning a ban, unlike some people in this thread. Regardless of party affiliation, these people are everything that's wrong with politics, and shouldn't have a place in our society, especially not in a computing forum, in a thread discussing games. Sad, really.

It can, and one day, it may even hit you.

HL2 is kind of creepy and hopeless, but it's nowhere near as dismal as 1984 is.

And if anyone else posts without mentioning HL2/1984 past this point, I'm releasing my trunk monkey.

It sounds like a great book, i just ordered it cheap on amazon to read it, I am not able to read a lot because i'm in college and during school i just don't get to read a lot.. but recently i'ver had so much work i'm going insane... i need something entertaining to do haha :)

The point that you're fighting back in HL2 is probably what changes the tone, yes; in 1984 the protagonist is a victim of a dystopian society, whereas Gordon Freeman comes in from the outside and fights the system. There are certainly parallels to things like the Breencasts in 1984, as well as the overall oppressiveness of course.

I you like that book I recommend -
The Giver
Fahrenheit 451
Animal Farm
Brave New World

Fahrenheit 451 was alright, i really liked Animal Farm though. I should re-read that... i'd probably get a lot more out of it now than before (when i was in high school i read it).

All these sorts of books/games/movies share a very similar concept.

You can argue many things stem off of it. Even movies like Aeon Flux and getting even more diluted, the Bourne Series.

Things are easy to link in a lot of cases, especially fiction :)
