So I decided to replace the stock Intel cooler in my sig rig and while not the best cooler, the Zalman 9500 is well regarded from all I've read. So I put it in and HWMonitor is reporting pretty much the same temps as the stock cooler. I bumped up my multiplier to 11.5 to go to 3.83GHz and ran Prime 95 for about 30 minutes. I was stable but the temps shot up to over 80C, not good.

I used Arctic Silver 5 for the paste instead of the included stuff. Double checked the mounting, though I really do like the clip mechanism, seems a little flimsy and the cooler can slide.

This cooler should perform better than the stock one shouldn't it? Thanks as always.

The "cooler can slide" sends me an alarm. I remember some of the "clips" specifically the bar, I hope I am remembering this design correctly, that kinda goes over the top and holds the whole assembly down looses tension easily resulting in low clamping force. That heatsink should be firmly held down, a gentle "wiggle" should result in no motion at all. I recall some people placing a Penny or a Nickle under the bar to cause it to hold the assembly down tighter to the CPU.

This is all from memory, please inspect your specific setup/mounting and make your own assessment. If the above makes no sense, disregard it completely.

How's the air flow in your case? How many fans you got? Where are they placed?

What temperatures you got otherwise? Like on drives, just inside the case, north bridge, etc.

For now I had the side off in an independently air conditioned room to remove those variables. Yes, this thing just doesn't seem to be on as tight as it should. I'll and another side fan at the top of the rig to see if that helps and then monitor the other temps with the case closed. Thanks!:)

A good cooler doesn't do shit for your system if you have bad temperatures in your case. Find out what your other temps are first.

And 72-82 is too high. Intel has set a thermal specification of 65c for your CPU and a voltage rating of 0.85 - 1.3625
