High Resolution Textures

They raise it quite a bit. With NMC's texture pack, Project Beauty HD, Fellout, and a few other mods Fallout 3 will eat up all of the vram on my GTX570 at 1920x1080. I also have a couple of texture packs installed with Doom 3 and sikkmod and that keeps my GTX570's vram usage maxed out at all times. I play Quake with a source port called Darkplaces and with the textures that I use it maxes out the vram on my GTX570 as well, it doesn't even use 300MB at stock.

The impact could be substantial. In some instances it could almost double vram usage. I've been in love with high quality texture packs since oblivion qarls texture pack and have used it wherever possible. I'm currently playing stalker complete maxed out and it makes a 2006 game trade blows with many 2011 games. Here is a link to the team who made stalker complete's portfolio and all 3 mods for all 3 stalker games http://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-pripyat-complete

Stalker doesn't even look like the same game with this mod enabled. I'm almost done with it but have been taking my time enjoying the scenery. It just looks breathtaking at 120hz in 3240x1920 portrait eyefinity.

You run call of Pripyat at 120fps at 3240x1920 on a pair fo 6950s? I'm sure the game was a lot more demanding than that...

I dunno, I ran it with the enhanced graphics and everything at 1920x1080 on my GTX 280 SLI setup maxed out and it run perfectly...never below 75 FPS I'm guessing, it was smooth as butter.

I think it was fairly intensive back in the day, but with recent optimization/patches/etc, and the progress of technology in general, it's not super crazy anymore.

Clear Sky is the most demanding of the STALKER's. It also looks the best, but it also the most inefficient, kind of like Crysis. The reason being that it uses DX10 which eats up so much power for what it does(The God rays are fucking beautiful though, but kill performance).

STALKER SoC with Complete mod at 1920x1080 is constantly using up 1010-1019mb for me. Pripyat is actually a bit less with the Complete mod. Clear Sky is about the same if not more than SoC with the Complete mod.

My modded Oblivion used 1021mb, and I bet it would have used more if it had more to access. (I think stock used maybe half that if even).

I know that I can't max out Clear Sky on my GTX570 at 1080p.
turn sun rays, sun quality and SSAO to medium, which look no different, and you easily can. heck I played it at 1920x1080 with my gtx260 just doing that and with AA off, view distance and grass lowered and got great performance. I did have to disable soft particles later because I was running out of vram though. the very beginning is the only real demanding part.

With 4x MSAA in DX11 mode at max detail, I have Call of Pripyat showing as 365/450 on my games chart - considering that the Battlefield 3 Beta was only 290/400 - that's pretty high. I don't think Clear Sky was much higher, if any. (Crysis is 355/670 in DX10 4xAA for reference).

Do you think vram use might go up (on SoC) if you had a card with more memory?

I'm asking this because I've seen some people claim that Nvidia cards can't use all their memory so seeing the numbers that you are getting 1010~1019 may be already maxed.

Anyone with good knowledge on this feel free to chime in...

That is certainly true of BF3 but I can't speak for other games, measuring video memory usage scientifically (as opposed to using the 'this works, this doesn't technique) is relatively new.

Great question and I wish I had a way of testing it, maybe when my brother finishes his rig with dual gtx 570s ill ask him to install SoC and the complete mod. Oh I forgot, I use 2xSSAO and 8xAA through the nvidia control panel for SoC.

No Pripyat is too demanding, I'm running Stalker complete which is a mod for shadows of chenobyl, that make the graphics look better than stalker cop, however run less demanding than all 3 stalker games even at max settings!!! The same team has a bad ass mod for Stalker COP too called Call of Pripyat Complete which has even better graphics and is less demanding than the standard COP game. They did an awesome job on that one. Here is a link http://paveldolgov.com/images/moddbimages/collection-posters_cut_parts_2010_3.jpg

All I've been playing lately is GTA IV with Ultimate Textures and Gionight ENB series, and let me tell you, it's a heavy hitter.

The enb series also has you use double resolution to enforce supersampling, so memory's just getting eaten up between 3840x2140 and 4xSSAA and 5GB's worth of enhanced textures.

I enjoyed GTA 4 very much on my rig and even EFLC but I couldn't imagine adding more demand to that game. It seems very poorly optimized. I wish a team made a complete overhaul mod that not only added HR textures but also some optimizations to the code just like they did for stalker, I'd be all over that!!

For point of reference, I've been re-playing CoP w/ Complete, and I'm able to get around 60 fps with everything on the highest, DX11 lighting, SSAO, blah blah blah @ 1920x1080. The game looks absolutely amazing.

Textures are the single most RAM intensive game option. Higher res textures (skybox, environment) top out around 8mp, which uncompressed would be 24-32 megabytes. Doesn't sound like much, but then add up the hundreds of textures in the game: the usual shader has 3 base textures: Normal, Specular and Diffuse, some use around 5 textures to accomplish effects. The ram fills up quite quickly.

Edit: JEBUS, looking at those GTA4.5 screens, I wanna go on steam and buy it just to try out those mods! That looks damn beautiful!

Ah ok, that makes more sense :)
