High quality, < 25-inch, =>8 bit, IPS?

I currently have a Viewsonic VX2263 and it's nice for what it is - but it must be a 6 bit panel because for an IPS it has pretty mediocre colors. It's great for games though as it has a 2ms gtg response time. 60 hz is fine with me.

Although my Retina MacBook is obviously crap at playing games, the colors are just so much more vibrant and pop so much more than on this monitor. I've tried different color settings that didn't really make any difference. I think I just need a higher quality display.

The problem is, I can't really find anything? I don't care about anything over 1080p (though also not necessarily against it) as I don't think there is a big enough difference to justify the performance hit at this time. I really wanted to go with the Dell U2515H but it's 8ms...I would

Manufacturers make it so difficult to compare apples to apples among different monitors. Some don't list panel type or bit rate, some do. So maybe I've missed something.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
You've missed pretty much everything about monitors specs:

8bits is the standard for PC use. 10 and 12 bits monitors require professional graphics cards that cost more than a complete high end gaming PC. Meaning 8bits colors is taken for granted unless one is buying a low end TN panel: most [H] users to not care for 6+2 Tn panels, nor game with 10-12 bits ( which BTW, are terrible for gaming)

The U2515H panel is about as good as an IPS panel can be on its price range in pretty much every metric relevant for your usage scenario. For professional gamers the next step up would be a 27" 1440p 144hz display, that costs around 50% more than the U2515H.

You are right not to trust manufacturers, and if you want to compare apples to apples, visit TFTcentral, read the reviews of monitors inside your budget and only then come back here to clarify your doubts.

That used to be true, but both AMD and nVidia support 10bit colour on their consumer-level cards now. It's still pointless though, as no games or common applications can output >8bit.

UHD Blu-rays are speculated to be 10-bit and should offer that at absolute minimum.
