High Pitched Noise??

I'm hearing a high pitched noise whenever the CPU is under a load. But it seems to be different when ever I hear it. Like if I run Prime 95, I don't hear it. If I do a disk cleanup and the hdd isn't doing anything I hear it. I also hear it during boot. I heard it on my old comp before I moved parts to the shuttle. I guess it would have to be the CPU, memory or maybe the hard drive. Its so odd. I used to hear the same noise from my laptop whenever the P4 in that was under a load. Any ideas as to how to maybe reduce the noise?

Specs:
Shuttle ST61G4 - ATI 9100 IGP
Pentium 4 2.4A @ 3.2 - 178x18
2x256 OCZ PC3700 Gold Rev. 2
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Maxtor 120GB ATA133 8MB
Sony 52x36x52 Burner

Old comp had the same specs cept it was a MSI PT880 Neo-LSR mobo.

Wha?!? I figure that if something called diskcleanup was working, the HDD would have activity. But since I don't think I've ever used it...

There are several components on motherboards that are known to make some noise. The likely culprit is the coils. They filter out electrical noise, but some of them whine a little. If I remember correctly, there has been some success in quiting them down with a dab of hotglue or by cramming a foam earplug into the middlepart of the coil. But first you should make sure that that is in fact what is making the noise. Another possible culprit it the PSU.

yah i havd psu's do that. mine does it right now. not loud at all though. u have to your ears close to it. but ive had other psu's where u can here them on the other side of my room. its normals for psu's to do it a little. i wouldnt worry about it to much unless it hurts your ears. i remember when i had this problem it was so annoying i ended up buying a new psu.

Yeah but its like when there isn't anything to clean up on the disk. Like i'd have 32kb to clean up so I don't see or hear the hdd doing anything. Hmmm...with the foam earplugs...do any kind work or should I find some special ones lol

EDIT: It is one of the newer SilentX 250W psu's they have in the shuttles now. If its quiet in here then I can hear it. But I have headphones I usually wear so I don't hear it that much. Oh well

I agree. Have you tried that earplug fix yourself? A while back I got a batch of gateway LCDs that squeal. I know it is the coils and some of the users complain about it. Since this noise is associated with normal operation (Gateway's answer) they will not replace them. So I am getting ready to try anything to stop the continual bitching by the few that have a problem with it.
