high performance fan recommendations

so I was reading that cfm is important for case fans but static pressure is also important when looking at fans for a heatsink. I have a xiggy dark knight and want to bring my temps down so I need a high performance 120mm. I don't care about how loud it is, with in some reason but even 40-50 dB is okay in my book (just don't want a jet engine screaming at me :p)

I was lookin at a scythe ultra kaze 3000, what do u guys think?? any recommendations?

ANYWAYS... I wouldn't get that fan personally, but if you are ok with the 45dB rating then it is the best dollar for CFM fan I know of on the market today for 120mm fans

These CM fans push an amazing 90 CFM and only 19dB (if CM or Newegg isn't blowing smoke about it)...

If you're determined to get a high static-pressure fan then either the Panaflo or Ultra Kaze 38mm thickness series is good. The San Ace 120x38mm is $25 at Petrastechshop, but it's a little better. I'd suggest a fan controller for any of them.

Note that the Ultra Kaze series has a cheaper sleeve-bearing, so it should not be used in a horizontal orientation (frame parallel to floor, but blowing perpendicular to floor).

Be careful, static pressure is important but mainly when the fan experiences resistance to airflow. So the fin density of your heatsink would have a lot to do with it. The static pressure thing is mostly, as archmage indicates, more of a watercooler's concern due to the way some raidators are constructed. Still it is worth noting and with a heatsink with closely spaced deep fins it would matter. Fins spaced further apart, say you slip a nickel between them, not so much. Archmage has some good info there. I love the 38mm thick medium panaflows although on occasion I have gotten a noisy one I have to return but use them whenever I can as a power rear exhaust fan on medium OC builds. Great fan but not silent.

Personally I have found the medium speed 38mm thick fans much better in terms of "liveability" compared to a 25mm thick high speed fan. Pushes just as much air just as hard but quieter. A high speed 38mm fan on a controller is about the best of all worlds, excepty maybe price. You have beastly performance but the controller will allow you to dial in the airflow vs noise to your taste. It can be annoying to some to mess with turning it up or down as the load/temp situation changes. eh.

Ya that is why I said "(if CM or Newegg isn't blowing smoke about it)..."

I am with you there is no way they are getting that CFM and the dB rating, when that high of CFM makes the air louder then that dB alone... LOL

Point being, pushing air is loud, the higher the CFM the louder it will get

but maybe they fan is that loud in a room without air :confused:
 
thanks a lot! learned more than i ever thought possible about computer fans :p some great info here

think i've decided to go with the panaflo ultra due to performance and availability so hopefully that will get my temps down and maybe even get me to 4ghz!
