I'm going to upgrade my current setup (see sig) in preps for some real fun on Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, and some other new games. (I built the rig in preps for Crysis, which turns out I thought was a VERY mediocre game so I hope I have better luck this time...)

I'm going to put in a 4870X2, and go to a bigger LCD. My last pick, the Samsung 20", was from a Sharky Extreme Gamers Guide. I really really like the Samsung 20". Great pic quality, no ghosting, etc. I just want bigger. 24-30

Too much new stuff floating around out there and I cant keep up with the info. I don't even know what "IPS" screen means. I will be using the monitor for gaming w/ a 4870X2 (FPS, RTS, all type of games really) and very very occasionally watching a movie. The Sharky guides aren't timed right (buying next week) so they can't help me out.

24"-30" LCD pics welcome. Thanks guys.

If you're going 30" look at these:

HP LP3065 30" lcd

or

Dell 3007WFP HC

24" if you can find one"

BenQ FP241VW 24"

The BenQ can still be had on Amazon from various places, but not from a big well known place like Newegg:

However, its native res of 1920 x 1200 scares me a bit.

Is this too high res for a "small" (24") monitor? I don't like tiny tiny text, webpages, and desktop icons. For example, on my 15.4' laptops, I have two of them. One is a 1280 x 800. And the other is 1680 x 1050. Again, both on 15.4" screens. I can't STAND the 1680 x 1050. Everything is too tiny. I GUESS that 1920 x 1200 would be ok size wise on a 24"? Help me out a bit here.

And is a 30" too big for a standard computer desk? I mean, would it be like sitting in the front row of a movie theater? How far away do you have to sit from a 30" monitor??

Thanks guys.

The 24'' will have lager text than both of the laptops.
And the 30'' actually have slightly smaller text than the 1280x800 15,4'' screen

The sitting distance will change depending on what you do, for reading text, I sit slightly closer than I do at my 24'' screen. (textsize)
I have both sitting about 60cm (~2 feet) from the desk edge.

The dot pitch on a 1920x1200 24" is .270 and on a 1680x1050 20" is .258, so your text and icons will be around 4 to 5% bigger. I know that doesn't mean much but there is a slight increase, so it should be easy for you if you sit at the same distance, or even a bit further back.

For 30" I've always been a big fan of the HP LP3065. It's the only 30" that has three DVI inputs and should run very well with your 4870X2. BUT the text will be the exact same size as your 20" because it has the same dot pitch of .258.

I would still go with some of the top recommendations listed in this thread for 24" and 26" displays (Doublesight, BenQ). I don't think you would lose with any. All of them are fast gaming displays with good response time and low input lag. Another to consider (when IT'S out) is the HP LP2475W.

BenQ G2400W(D) should be an excellent choice for FPS because of its lowe input-lag.

You can get the BenQ FP241VW direct from BenQ right now for $499 while supplies last... I'd get it myself but I'd prefer the HD convention of 16:9 to the PC 16:10.

i would get the dell 3007WFP-HC; it is on sale on Dell Refurbished for $900 right now. the Hazro is also good if you want even lower input lag but it is quite a bit more costly.

FORGET BS 24'S.....get a 26in{as I have}.......just make sure you research input lag.
I would recommend a 27, but they all seem to have too much input lag.
I think 30's suck.....I'd rather a 26 and a 37-40in 1080p HDTV.

Hey guys.

Thanks for all the advice.

Just wanted to update, I replaced my old 21" Samsung 215TW with a new 24" Samsung 2493HM.

I really really like it for gaming so far (even though Im still on my 9800GX2, going to wait for the ATI drivers to mature before getting the 4870X2) as well as spreadsheet work and web browsing.

For anyone interested in a good 24" monitor right at the 400 dollar mark, I think the 2493HM is f-ing great.

glad you're enjoying it, I purchased the 2693HM from bestbuy on clearance for $289 + tax and it was a very fast gaming monitor while I had it.

Wow, never heard of the 2693HM. A 25.5" screen too!

Did I mess up by buying the 2493HM (its a 24"). I love it so far for gaming, and it looks great, but for the same price it seems I could have gotten a 25.5" (ie, your 2693HM)!

Opps??

It's a huge YMMV though, so I worry about it :)

I'm sure the 2493HM is not that much diff from the 2693HM besides the 1.5" of space. I did, however, get my 2693HM at BB for 285 out the door...sales tax work around. I really love this monitor. It's freaking sexy. The stand is height adjustable, rotates left to right, and the monitor also does portrait mode.

The only cons are that the buttons blow weiners...they are super hard to see at night and you have to touch them the right way and that I have a bit of backlight bleeding on the bottom which isn't that much of a big deal unless I'm watching some wide screen pr0n LOL!
