The specs of the system in question is in my signature. The Q6600 machine. Also, because of the heat and summer time, I always put it at stock and do not OC it. Only in the fall and winter do I OC it. So it's at stock speed.
We are having a pretty gross heat wave here in the Northeast, as most of you from the US know.. actually, I think the majority of the country is having this heat wave! (Or just hot summer weather). My desktop is out in the dining room because it's so loud and the lights so bright, I can't sleep with it in my room. I just have long wires going to the speakers, mouse, keyboard, monitors, etc into my room. Usually this isn't a problem, especially in the winter, spring and fall.. or even relatively mild summer days. But today.. I'm a bit worried about it.
My CPU is pretty idle. I really just have Firefox open with some streams on Ustream, and that's about it. The cores are at 68, 69, 73, 71. (My GPU's are even at 71 and 72, with the fans on 100%). Is this really bad for the CPU itself? Thank God I'm not doing anything intensive.. I almost think I should turn it off, and just use the laptop or something.
I haven't changed the thermal paste in maybe two years? Maybe even three? Do you think it would be worth it to re-seat the HSF and re-apply the thermal paste? I hope/wonder if the MX-1 paste I have from 4 years ago is still good, and still a decent enough thermal paste.. or if I should buy a newer one.
It would be really difficult to move the PC into my room for the next day or two, there's literally no room for that monstrosity in here. Do you think these temperatures are pretty bad considering the temp? I would say it's WELL over 90F in the dining room (We only have AC's in the bedrooms). It might be close to 100F or higher in the house. And it's 98F outside right now. I don't think I've ever seen the temps that high. And actually, since I started writing, they rose 2-3C more.
I also am going to turn it off, and clean it out with some compressed air and try to clean out the grills for the fans again. There are 3 front fans, 2 rear fans, one fan on top, a side fan, and I have the Zerotherm Nirvana cooler.
