For many reasons a PSU with a single, very powerful +12V rail is often desired.

The new DX10 GPU's would be my main reason!

These reasons can include multi-CPU's, a large number of HDD's, a TEC, etc.

Under the ATX12V 2.xx specs for dual/multi +12V rail PSU's,
the +12V rails are usually limited to 18A, this is often not enough.

Therefore I recommend the following single rail PSU's.

What the signifigance of the ones listed in blue font color? Higher recommendation?

I'm going for the Silencer 750 this weekend. :)

"Best Bang for the Buck" recommendation. ;)

I'm a bit confused... Arn't dual or quad rails suppose to act as one? The reason for splitting them is to provide quieter operation and more stable power. Is this a proven fact that single +12v rails perform better for upcoming high-drain graphics cards?

I'm a bit confused on that as well. Then what is the purpose of 4 rails?

Good post and thanks.

Great Thread btw!

No most multi-rail have over-current protection (OCP) on each rail, which is fine & good most of the time.

sticky? :)

lots of good info here, especially for the new technologies coming out.

They are separate rails to provide more stability.
The higher the current flowing through any connectors, the more voltage is dropped at the connector (due to impedance mismatch and bad connections).
The same applies for the resistance/reactance of the wire, voltage will be dropped, the longer the wire the more the drop.

As the current flow varies (which it can do wildly), the voltage at the end of the wire can fluctuate a lot causing instability.

In theory perhaps, but not in this reality with these PSU's!

The voltages on the Zippys & PC P&C's are rock stable100% of the time! ;)

The theory is sound in practice too.

If you have good connections and well built components being powered, you are unlikely to suffer problems.
A bad connection is known to make the system unstable, the above is one reason why.
The voltage drop over the wire can compound the issue in high current situations.

I own an Enermax EG651P-VE. Really nice power supply, well worth the cost even though I bought it when it was $123. Powered 14 drives with no problems, albeit with a 5v-based system.

Also, the efficiency on the 550W sparkle you linked in blue is only specified at 63%! Ouch! The Enermax is specced at 72% efficiency. I can't find a review of either supply that actually tests efficiency, though, so it could just be manufacturer BS.

On anything with more than 6 HDD's you need to always spec a single rail.

HDD's can pull close to +12V@3A for a couple of seconds during spin-up & that can over load a rail, causing some PSU's to shut down.

The FSP/Sparkle 550W is an old design, at least as old as the PC P&C 510W. 63% sounds about right for it.

I'm uncertain I would even recommend the Antec - it's a CWT model likely full of Fuhjyyu. I should hope that this EPS model is better cooled than most other CWT Antecs.

I am going to go with a Silencer 610 I think. If I am going to upgrade....mys well get it done and make sure I get something stable.
E6600 / g80 air cooling overclock project, can't risk a shotty PSU.
Unless someone can find a better deal....everything seems to be tri / quad rail in thise price range.

I would go Corsair 620W before going with the PC P&C 610W, now the PC P&C 750W is a whole new ball game. :D

For my opinion I would go for the 750 Silencer then the 610 because there both
single rail and are excellent psu's?

They are both excellent PSU's, however if the PC P&C 610W is enough then the Corsair 620W will also be enough &
the Corsair is cheaper, modular, quieter, smaller & has a 5yr warranty.

Picked up my Silencer 750 from Fry's yesterday! :D

Probably as sexy lookin' as a PC Power and Cooling unit can get....

Corsair 620w is more then the PC&C silencer 610.
Corsair 620: $145
PCP&C 610: $155

Where do you see the PCP&C for less? Finding the Corsair for more is trivial ;)

Google/Froogle has the Corsair 620W from $150. ;)
Huh? First, I got that price from Froogle. Second, I was asking him if he had a link to somewhere that sells the PCP&C cheaper. Of course you can find the Corsair for a higher price elsewhere; I remarked on that in my post.

I am utterly confused as to what your post means and why you posted it. Enlighten me.

More shopping options. ;)
