From what I can tell if you shut down your computer or stop the folding services, when you later resume folding you will have to restart the frame you were on. If you hibernate your computer, theoretically all data saved in the ram should be saved to the hard disk. Does this mean you would resume folding exactly where you left off?
 
F@H creates a checkpoint every 15 min (by defualt, but users can change this)... So the client will start from the last checkpoint... But why hiberate the PC (won't it still be using power/etc?) why not just leave the computer on?

No. Hibernating physically cuts all power. It saves everything from RAM to the hard drive first, though, so the computer resumes when it wakes up.

But OSUguy is right- FAH sets up a checkpoint every 15 minutes.

The GPU client is another story- mine resets frames every time Catalyst reloads settings, including manual fan settings. I'm not sure how the drivers will react to hibernation, so I wouldn't recommend Hibernating your PC if you're doing any GPU Folding.
 
There also use to be, may still be, an issue that if you hibernate for too long F@H will think that something bad happened with the calculation and it will delete the unit and start over/get a new one. 6hrs comes to mind for the length you'd have to hibernate for issues.

It's actually 3 hours, and it was with the 5.02 client. I haven't heard if they've fixed it in the 5.04 client, so I assume it hasn't been fixed. And I actually believe that the client does a checkpoint when it gets stopped, so you don't actually lose any work. In any case, I'd recommend shutting down.

 
I was just curious as I set all of my pcs power button to hibernate so I can turn them off quickly and when they power back on I have everything just the way I left it.

You can stop that in the -config by telling the client to ignore deadlines.

By the same token, don't we have a hard and fast rule around here about never shutting down a machine that folds?;)

Actually, I thought the rule was we tear the thumbs off the people that turn machines off, then rip out the power button and seal the hole with superglue. The final step is to remove the shutdown option everywhere in Windows so they can't shut down that way. I guess there is one more step, glue the power cord into the PSU and the wall so the machine can't be unplugged. For some reason you get in trouble if you permanently set the breaker for the circuit in the on position so we don't do that.

LOL. However, leaving the computer on all the time is not a viable option for everyone. Comes down to electricity, temperature, etc.

Or laptop.

I fold on my laptop and I leave it in hibernate all the time (sometimes for more than 6 hours, I believe) and I have never had any problems.
