Hexus tests 34 power supplies

How did they load them? Why doesn't anybody ever put that out there? What was the load on the 12V? The load on the 5V? Great... they have the means of varying the loads, but how did they vary them?

I'm only on page two yet, but it looks like they used Fortron's own lab (though I two would like some useful details). I count at least 8 Fortrons in the test, too, including the new 650w and 700w SSI units. Etasis was honest about their unit's peak power, I like honest in an OEM ;)

Noticably absent from their list of 34 reviewed PSU's are the Seasonics. Not one Seasonic, yet several brands I hadn't heard of before... FSP Group?? SSM Technology?

Huh?

Joking about the bolded right?

Don't worry too much about the lack of Seasonics - SPCR does a better job reviewing them anyway.

FSP=Fortron Source Power. Interesting little blurb about them claiming 900w @ 75% efficiency from the design in the new Epsilon 700w (but can it be done reliably, I want to know).

Ugh - they actually liked the Deer...

I was surprised not to see any Antec PSU's.

Also, Enermax's performance came as a shock to me. I was quite surprised to see that their PSU's didn't even come close to meeting their advertised ratings. I always thought of them as being second to PCP&C.

at last a Tagan!!!

I started to think i was the only person who owned one.

I smell fish.

I had a "mere" EG495P-VE and was able to put a total of 32A load on the 12V rails for at least a half an hour and the voltages never budged. This was while there was a 108.3W load on the 3.3V and 5V rail combined. Something that's not unusually "low" for today's systems. The end result was a power supply that would maintain 508W of power.

Yet they couldn't get the 600W to hold 28A of load?

Shens. Maybe I trust Enermax too much to not lie on their labels like folks like Powmax do, but the fact that I loaded a 500W PSU more than they could load a 600W tells me somethings up.

I was surpriised too since I have the EG565P-VE and as you see below quite a load on it

Both enermax's passed the THG stress test you trashed albeit they were AX not P or european not US versions

Can't get enermax to send you one for a review??? Love to see that

I dunno. I bought the Enermax I reviewed and can't afford to buy another.

Anyone know a contact at Enermax? ;)

you have mail

No. No I don't. Really.

EDIT: Ok. Now I do. Usually someone says I have mail AFTER they've sent the message. ;)

Yes, yes you do. I sent it just after I posted

I'm keeping the e-mail private for now but if they sit on it I MAY post it in public so we can make it a movement like in alices restaurant ;-)

well they did say in the review that it didn't seem the unit couldn't _handle_ the load...its over current/voltage/i don't know protection just kicked in. they even said the enermax had very good efficiency and was not even warm when it shut off.

the review was kinda impressive for the equipment they use, but the reviewer just seemed a little too giddy when he talked about Fortron. i guess you can't really expect more from a hardware review site these days

Right.. Which means when they loaded the 12V up to only 28A, it shut off. And naturally it's not going to be very hot. It only had a 28A load on it! :D

I am curious what is going on with the Enermax, as I currently own one. I am pretty sure that its a better power supply than that review leads people to believe. I saw another review on it, praising the Enermax for being able to deliver almost all the power it was rated for, and that it's effeciency was very good.

Given the long & good history of Enermax, I wouldn't worry about one review.

Now if Enermax could just get their website(s) straightened out, so we don't have to learn chinaeese!

Accodring to PCP&C's "Inside Story", their 510W was able to put out more than Enermax's 550W, and the Enermax's second fan provided no extra cooling.

From what I've seen, Enermax PSUs are a bit lighter than comparably rated Antecs, with slightly smaller transformers and sometimes filter capacitors, and lower capacity transistors and diodes (i.e., 300W Antec's high voltage section uses a pair of 9A MOSFETs, 350W Enermax just a single 9A).

Well I know this much, my 600Watt Enermax can power my machine as it sits, just fine right now. I'll be upgrading to Opteron 254's this next week so hopefully the increased power draw won't be a problem. If it is, I am going to be pissed.

It shouldn't be any problem as long as you use the EPS cabling. ;)

Well, when you compare a PC Power and Cooling 510 against almost any other company's 500~550W the same is true because PCP&C rates their power supplies at a higher ambient temperature than ANYONE else. So to compare the two is really apples and oranges.

As for the second fan, yeah.. There's a reason why when a PSU has two 80MM fans it's front to back, not bottom to back. On that same note; of course PCP&C's fans move more air. They move at the speed of helicopter rotors (and create about as much noise.) At least the fans in the Enermax don't spin too fast creating too much noise, and the efficiency of the Enermax is actually BETTER than the Turbo Cool 510 at the same ambient temp, so the lack of air flow is actually a moot point.

I have two enermax PSU's. THe EG701AX-VE(W) and the 660 EPS w/ 4 twelve v rails. That review just was not loving the enermax at all. Any one had an enermax just poop on em that they havent asked to do to much?

I do. I have no choice, my Tyan K8WE won't have it any other way.

Not sure why that is, all other reviews I've seen on Enermax PSU's have been favorable.

kinda biased imo to be conducted in a PSU manufacturers lab. Im not mad at hexus. i go and read their reviews.
