First things first.

Looking for some hard drives. I think 3TB drives are the best for me. Suggestions? Seems like the Hitachi drives are becoming quite hard to find.... why is this?
 
Because the sale of Hitachi's storage division to Western Digital was finalized awhile ago. WD is phasing out the Hitachi drive brand IIRC.

So looks like the only reasonable option is Samsung F4s? :S
 
the thailand plant made all the ultrastars and the chinese plant made the deskstars. after the flood they needed to get the ultrastar production going again but the chinese plant had no capacity so instead of trying to make a certain amount of each type they just cannibalized the deskstar line for the more profitable ultrastar line.
 
Well... that's one way to phrase it. ;)

I'll do some more research and post back when I move onto the next component...
 
The good manufacturers get bought by the crap manufacturers, and it's the enthusiasts who end up getting the shaft.
