hello everyone ive got a problem and have had it for about a week now and its total BS if u ask me...i feel so stupid cause i cant figure out whats goin on. I just moved my system into a new case,antec sonata. well i got everything install again and now when i boot up and get in to winxp it locks up. i restart and and sometimes get BSOD over the bast few days ive reinstalled winxp a few times thinkin it was a bad install...ive switched PSUs didnt make a diff even with drivers,sometimes that can cause the system to lock up.
well heres my sys setup

Abit VP6
Dual P3 800s
512 ram
visiontek ti 4200
maxtor 250GB hdd (bought another thinkin the hdd had gone bad,now have'em setup in raid 0-467gb w00t)

search memtest 86 ingoogle and download it then put it on a floppy then leave it in after you restart to boot

i have ram in slots 0 1 2 so which stick is it?just pull and find out huh
 
Install only one stick of memory. Run memtest with all tests enabled, overnight. If it comes back with errors, you more than likely have a bad stick of RAM. If it comes back with "no errors", add another stick of ram. Repeat the exercise. You can pretty easily identify the bad stick this way.

Only other thing to consider is that you may find you have RAM that works fine alone, but doesn't play well with other sticks in your MoBo. I've seen it before; it has to do with timing margin, etc. specific to your hardware. That's why I always recommend stability testing. Here's a thread I started some time back on the subject.

Do you have good airflow in the case?

This sounds like it could be an overheating problem since the only thing changed was the case. I'd also check for grounding problems.
 
ya,i have good air flow.....brand new case,antec sonata...i got 2 120mm fans inside...i just dont get why this starts doin this now when i wasnt having any problems in the other case...no lockup no nothin
 
There is one other thing I can think of that may cause problems.

If you removed the RAM when swapping the parts to the other case and didn't get them in the same slots they were in, it could cause problems. I've had instances where the same sticks of RAM wouldn't work right in one configuration but swap the slots they were in and everything went well.

The only other thing I can think of is checking the heatsinks on the CPUs to make sure they are clean and maybe reapply thermal goop. You have probably already done this but I thought I might suggest it.

This still sounds like a possible heat problem to me. Either that, or a grounding problem.
 
yes, those all suggestions sound viable.

Memory should be easy to check. If you have another module lying around put that in to see if it works. If it does then test each dimm for errors.

Or perhaps grounding with the power supply in the new case is causing a short of some sort as well as mobo to the case. And I assume that you've used the copper screws that separate the mobo from the case within the new case. Plastic washers could help.
I guess the simplest solution is to try the system outside of the case to see whether there are grounding issues.

Cpu hsf could have been nudged somehow and perhaps remounting the hsf would alleviate overheating issues. This wil require some more thermal paste of course.
 
hey get this ....i got winxp reinstalled along with the updates and the sp1...im not getting any more bsods'.im just now experiencing lockups w/ no error msgs...any ideas? everything seems to be fine...installed winamp (played music) installed some problems and nothin happend
 
perhaps a virus or really aggressive spyware? I read in PC Mag that some aggressive code actually codes itself as a windows file, so maybe downloading the trialware of Norton2004, spy bot and Adaware would help. Scan in safemode and if it finds anything delete it.

Dunno, if this is the problem but I hope everything goes well.

perhaps u can get better help in the software section if it is a sofware issue.
 
Sounds like my gay PSU, swap out the PSY just to be safe. See if it fixes anything.
 
ok ill try that.....if its is the PSU that i just got in this new case,can i return the PSU.....OH can i get a list on like lockups with no bsods'well what you have all been through with your system locking up...ill go through one by one to find the problem
