I have a x800 non pro edition. Last night I left my comp on while running defrag and when I woke up the screen had weird characters in all different colors. I figured it locked up or something rebotted and eveyrthing was fine. Then after I got business taken care of I tried to get in a little Counter Strike and the VPU recovery runs non stop if I try to play anything. It locks up sometimes too. I uninstalled the drivers reinstalled them also tried different modded revisions of same driver(newest catalyst). I haven't yet rolled back the driver but honestly I had a radeon 7500 that did this almost exactly and the memory on that card was corrupted.

I am now thinking about bios flashing as a possible cure, however when I try to back up my bios, the program says no ati products are present.

I am completely at a loss here. 2d works perfectly, When VPU recovery runs it says that hardware implentation of 3d is not possible and it will be handled in software. And to restart to turn hardware back on.

Do you run Diskeeper and are using the 5.7 CCC edition drivers?

Reason I ask is because the same thing happened to my bro in laws machine yesterday. I rebooted and all seemed well, guess I'll find out soon enough if it isn't.
 
I was running the cat 5.7 and regular windows defrag, I also had a few things running in the background including ati tray tools, but no overclocking.
 
update:
well i rolled back the drivers to no avail.
same issues no change.
So I tried the cardout on a fresh windows install(I keep a spare hard drive sitting around for these things) and same problem.

I decided to flash the bios, however now the card wont output at all, so I am screwed I guess, I flashed it to a bios of an identical card, since there is no reason it shouldn't work and the is now no longer with us.

If I can find an original powercolor bios i will re flash it but for now it seems I lost a good friend.

I can't rma or anything since I bought off a guy on ebay and I switched the original color for an aftermarket one, throwing away the old one.

oh well its just 200 bux i guess.

sucks I won't be gaming for a while
