1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
- 60% gaming, 30 % web surfing, 10% Photoshop

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$1,000 w/ tax and shipping included (a little flexible here). Obviously I will be getting the 3 monitors separately and this is not included in the above price.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
US, Richmond, VA

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Case, Mobo, CPU, RAM, PSU, CPU Cooler, CD Burner, keyboard, mouse, HDD, SSD

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Two MSI nVidia 460s - plan to use in SLI - gift from brother

6) Will you be overclocking?
Yes, I plan to but have never messed with this before

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
Currently 1680 x 1050 and 22". I would like to do a 3 monitor setup using 27". This would then be 5760 x 1200.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Now. I hope to get in the next week and then assemble the week after that. Plan to have everything together and running before 12/14/11.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
It will definitely need dual SLI for the dual 460s. I would like tri-SLI capability in the mobo if I can do within my budget. I plan to pickup another 460 down the road (not included in budget). Would like USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
No, I will need to buy a 64 bit copy of Windows 7. This needs to fit in the $1,000 budget. Any guidance as to what version I should get based on what I will use computer for?

So far I am thinking about:

  • [*]Case - Need suggestion
    [*]Mobo- Need suggestion (tri-sli)
  • CPU - i5-2500K
  • RAM - G. Skill 2 x 4 GB 1333
[*]PSU - Need suggestion (needs to support tri-sli 460s)
  • Cooling - CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
  • DVD - Plan to get generic one
[*]HDD - I think the hitachi 1tb was recommended...
  • SSD - Crucial M4 SSD

I have concern that the i5 may limit the tri-sli setup. Is this a valid concern for future games (say in the next 6 - 12 months)?

I also want a power supply that will be able to push a tri-sli setup if down the road I go to tri 560s or 66X (net iteration of nVidia cards).

-=Thanks!

AFAIK, you can't Tri-SLI with GTX 460 cards. The most you can do is regular SLI.

I recommend the following hard drive:
$156 - Hitachi Desktar 7K1000.D HDS721010DLE630 1TB SATA 6.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Case wise I recommend the following cases:
$120 - Lian Li PC-9F ATX Case
$122 - Corsair Carbide Series 500R ATX Case
$170 - Corsair Special Edition White Graphite Series 600T ATX Case

PSU wise, just to cover our bases since you want Tri-SLI, let's go big:
$226 - Corsair HX1050 1050W Modular PSU

Danny,

Thanks for the great response. I have never done SLI before, so I do not know anything about it. Based on your comment I will downgrade to a regular SLI for my setup. Will I be able to game well at 5760 x 1200 with two 460s, or will there be issues there?

Does anyone have a suggested PSU if I am going just for regular SLI? I will hunt around for something around 850W maybe in a Corsair?

Also, the biggest suggestion I need is around the mobo; any help there would be great!

Here is the updated list.
  • Case - Corsair Carbide Series 500R Mid Tower Gaming Case
    [*]Mobo- Need suggestion (regular SLI)
  • CPU - i5-2500K
  • RAM - G. Skill 2 x 4 GB 1333
[*]PSU - Need suggestion (needs to push TWO 460s - regular SLI)
  • Cooling - CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
  • DVD - Plan to get generic one
  • HDD - Hitachi Desktar 7K1000.D HDS721010DLE630 1TB SATA 6.0Gb/s Hard Drive
  • SSD - Crucial M4 SSD

Here is what I am thinking for motherboard and PSU:

ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 Intel Z68
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131729

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V v2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009

With everything above, this brings the price to $1,237.90 + $36.23 shipping - $35 for rebates or $1,239.13.

Does anyone see anywhere that I can cut out ~$240 from this setup?

  • Case - Corsair Carbide Series 500R Mid Tower Gaming Case
  • Mobo- ASUS P8Z68-V LGA 1155 Intel Z68
  • CPU - i5-2500K
  • RAM - G. Skill 2 x 4 GB 1333
  • PSU - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series CMPSU-850TX 850W
  • Cooling - CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
  • DVD - ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM
  • HDD - Hitachi Desktar 7K1000.D HDS721010DLE630 1TB SATA 6.0Gb/s Hard Drive
  • SSD - Crucial M4 SSD
  • OS - Win-7 64-bit Home Premium

Here is an old [H] article with a few benchmarks of two GTX 460s in SLI
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/08/17/geforce_gtx_460_sli_vs_radeon_hd_5870_cfx_5760

I don't think they are going to work very far into the future without severely turning down graphics options. However they should work amazing on your current 22" 1680x1050.

As far as cutting the budget, going with the PSU Forceman recommended can save you $50 if you bought it today.

Cases are very subjective but you could look at some of the other ones that are closer to $100. I think if I was buying a $100 mid-tower today I wouldn't hesitate to use the Fractal Design Arc Midi case. Fractal Design Arc Midi. You can always populate the fans as you need later.

You could also try to get the i2500k cheaper than what Newegg sells them for either through Microcenter if you have one locally or there's an etailer that [H] doesn't allow in posts that may price match to MC.

The only other suggestions would be to drop the SSD or change the HDD. If you have another HDD around that can be used I'd suggest using it until the prices normalize sometime next year. If you don't then look for the smallest size that is usable for the time being and upgrade later.

Since you're not doing tri-SLI, you could drop the mobo down to this:
$145 - MSI P67A-GD55 Intel P67 ATX Motherboard

Other than that, what Forceman said +1.

Thanks for all the great help!

Here are the changes I made:
- removed the HDD (try to limp along on an old one or USB one until prices come down)
- switched the mobo for MSI P67A-GD55 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX
- Changed the PSU to CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W ATX12V v2.31

This brings the price to: $1,047.91 + $24.83 for shipping - $60 for MIR = $1,012.74 through NewEgg.

If I get the case from amazon and shop around for the CPU/Mobo combo I can get under $1K.

It looks like the 850W will give some room to go to 560 SLI or perhaps 660 SLI down the road.

-=Thanks for everyone's help!!!

Yeah the PSU will easily handle 560s SLI and more.

I easily handled 2 3870s overclocked and a modest Q9550 overclock on a 620HX for about 2 years. The PSU is still going strong today.

I have the TX850 and it is currently powering my overclocked 2600k with 2 overclocked 6950s with 6970 unlock with no issues.
