Help with I/O plate installation!

Hi,

I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to building computers, and I need help installing the mobo on my new build. I installed the standoffs, and now I have the mobo and this I/O cover that has some sharp prongs sticking out on it. I read here: http://mechbgon.com/build/index.html that the prongs are to prevent EMI or something. Do those need to touch certain parts on the mobo or something?

Also, this mobo (Gigabyte X38-DQ6) has dual NICS, but one of holes in the I/O plate for the second nic is cover by a metal tab. Is that tab supposed to be broken out before I fit the mobo to it? Or is it supposed to be bent back and make contact with some type of signal ground on the mobo?

Also, how do you install the I/O plate and mobo? Do you fit the plate to the mobo and then position the mobo on the mobo tray, or do you first put the plate in the opening in the mobo tray?

First break the piece of metal covering the second Ethernet jack then put the I/O shield into the case after your done with that just put the motherboard into the case.

Those metal tabs touch the top of the port they are plugged into and yes they are to help for grounding and emi.

Thanks alot for the help. Also, what about the one covering the second nic. It like half covers the second NIC port. Should that be bent back or what?
 
Yea bend it back and forth until it snaps off.


Just to elaborate a bit, you case probally had a "universal" back plate. Grab it with pliers and twist it back and forth until it pops out. Remove the small metal sheild on the new i/o plate to uncover you 2nd port. The new cover will snap in the hole left by the original cover, play with it, you will see, it will snap in firmly when you get it just right. the "metal fingers" should of course be inside the case.

Here is the trick, sometimes there are also little metal flaps as well as the "fingers". that flap is susposed to rest on top of a stack of USB ports/whatever, If you are not carefull it will go into a connector when you drop and slide the board in. Just make sure none of those protruding fingers or flaps get inside a connector, bend the flap up if you need to. They should press around openings or on top of the metal housing of connector "stacks" but never inside a connector.
 
break the part covering the second ethernet port (as already stated), then you'll need a flat head screw driver or a butter knife...something NOT SHARP to install the IO shield. line the IO shield up with the hole on the back of the case, and use the flat head tip in the grooves and apply pressure until it snaps into place. ensure that the IO shield is all the way in before moving on. you will probably have some tabs of metal on the PS/2 ports and maybe the ethernet or USB, bend them up just a bit. when installing the motherboard, ensure that these tabs sit ON TOP of the ports that they are above. DO NOT allow the tab above the ethernet port to get jammed into the port itself. After that, just screw the board to the standoffs, and you're done!

edit: as usual with the senior (and I mean posts Bill...not age :D) Bill beat me to it.

What if the guides on the I/O on the exterior of the case block some areas of the ports? Should these just be broken off?
