ok so I have a fairly good ideal what I plan on getting for the most part. For my receiver I am think something like this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8251456&type=product&id=1169512521608 and for my subwoofer I am thinking http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7039527&type=product&id=1099395911174 now the only think i am having some difficultly with is my speaker setup. What would you gys consider buying 7 separate speakers Center, 2 front, 2 side, and 2 back or going with some sort of package? Also what kind of single speakers or package would u recomend? Any input would be appreciated

unless you have some sort of best buy coupon, I suggest looking away from the klipsch. Yamaha is some good stuff, but I prefer Onkyo in that price range. Plus there are good prices if you registrer over at shoponkyo.com. SVC and HSU make good subs. Av123 and ascend audio are good choices.

for the speakers there needs to be a good bit more info. namely price range and primary usage. I am assuming it will be mostly movies.

What kind of budget are we talking about here? I could recommend dirt cheap speakers that would sound like crap or I could recommend speakers that would require you to get a second mortgage on your house that would sound heavenly.

One thing I would try and do is purchase a great 5.1 setup compared to a good 7.1 setup. That way you can spend more on higher quality speakers than in a 7.1 setup.

Regarding your reciever, I think its good, but I think you could do a lot better for your money if your research a little more. Here is another possible suggestion...http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/receivers/marantz-sr4002

ok i will have to do a little more research with what u guys gave me on the receivers, now for the speakers i am thinking some where along the lines of 500 dollars and no more than 1000 dollars if u guys have a good 5.1 system u like then what would that be as well as the 2 more speakers. This is goin to be for watching movies

Are you looking for WAF (wife acceptance factor) or pure sound quality? Bookshelf or Floorstanding?

In my opinion one of the best bang for your buck line of speakers out right now would be the Infinity Beta series. Another bang for your buck set of speakers would be from Axiom audio. They might be out of your price range depending on the configuration, but if you can pony up the money, they would be my choice.

I have one other option. I have a relative who recently purchased the Onkyo HT-SR800 THiB system. In all honesty this is one of the best HTiB systems I've ever heard. For the price and features it offers I think it's a hard thing to beat. Take a long look at that. It's 7.1 to boot!

Cheers!

I agree that it is better to go for a higher quality 5.1 system than a lower quality 7.1 system.

If you're looking for WAF and most of your kit is gloss black, consider the KEF 3005 series. Good speakers with good performance.

The older model (not the SE model which is well outside your price range) is around $1500 with the subwoofer, which is within your price range if you include the price of your original subwoofer. You can probably negotiate a deal without the subwoofer to get it around your $1000 price range or just forget your original subwoofer choice and get the full package.

ok well i did a little browsing and wanted to see what u guys think now would it be better to jst go with a full setup like this http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=HT-S990THX&class=Systems&p=i or would u say go with my original ideal with buying a receiver, sub and speaker separate? also just to clear up some other questions asked I am really just looking for an intense experience when I watch tv movies etc.. If i do end up buying a complete package that gives me somewhere between 2000-3000 willing to spend I can always take some time and save up some more if u see a system worth it. Any other questions feel free and thxs again for any help.

There are better places to ask for speaker advice if you're looking at spending $3000. You'd be better off looking through reviews (by the hi-fi media) of good award winning speakers or asking here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=89

But anyway...

You will probably get better performance out of a good seperates system over an "all-in-one" system. When I say seperates, in the context of home cinema, this can include the speakers and subwoofer as one package. You'll have to purchase the receiver/amplifier and DVD player seperately.

Looks like your only criteria is "an intense experience". If that is the case, then the Onkyo package isn't for you. You don't want tiny little subtle speakers, you want big, massive floorstanding speakers. Small satellite speakers are far superior to those of a few years ago, but for sheer power, there is no substitute for size.

ok thxs for ur help echn111 i will post in the avs and see what i can get from them

From my HTPC Gallery thread:

A/V Electronic Gear
Harmon Kardon AVR-247 7.1 Ch 600W HDMI Reciever
http://www.harmankardon.com/product_...prod=AVR 247
I am really happy with this reciever, it was an upgrade from an older Denon AVR-588S Reciever. First, it looks amazing; the blue LEDs really stand out. You can customize each input on so many levels, through an on-screen display (yes it has an OSD that comes up on your display), and then rename the titles. HDMI. Plenty of inputs/outputs. Upconverts everything up to 720p over HDMI or component. Less than $500.

Optoma HD70 720p 1000 Lumens 4000:1 Projector
http://www.optomausa.com/product_det...product_id=294
Another amazing unit. 720p DLP display with every input, including HDMI. Picture is great, and very easy to customize/tweak. Optoma had a rebate program for a little while so these could be found for about $800.

These Polk speakers are a great value. Sound quality is wonderful and they easily fit into a $500 budget.

MTX 12" 100W Powered Subwoofer
http://www.mtxhome.com/p/subs/sw2.aspx
Great value again, about $100. Powered, has line inputs, level control, auto on/off. Crank it up and you'll rumble the house.
