hey guys...i havent been following hardware lately so im a little out of the loop. im looking to build a new pc. im working with an athlon 3200xp 64bit, 1gb ram, nvidia6800gts, and about 200gigs of harddrive space.

i do mild gaming. most of it is done on my 360, but i do play a lot of L4D. i want the computer mostly to handle SolidWorks(3d modeling program) and Photoshop well..so it doesnt need a top of the line video card. i probably wont be rendering with the pc. i would like to casually game on it tho, so it should be able to handle newer games (altho not on the highest settings).

so yeah thats that. my budget for the build is about $800. that includes the components, case and monitor. the keyboard/mouse arent included. i dont want a monitor bigger than 20inches.

- Do you also have a transferable and legit OS key as well?
- Are you planning to OC?
- What parts are you planning to reuse, if any?

The Phenom 9850 BE is a quad-core CPU so that should help out with your 3D modeling software and Photoshop. Tthe 4GB of RAM and 64bit OS will also help out with those apps. The HD4850 is more than enough to play many games at near max setting on that 19" monitor with its 1440x900 resolution. The WD6400AAKS is one of the fastest consumer hard drives out now.

hmm thanks for the post. is that AMD better than any other quad-core Intel? the price seems to be about the same as Intels.

also, how much better is the HD4850 over the 9800gtx(g92)? both are the same price and looking up benchmarks, the 9800 seems to be better.

No but I imagined there is a special going on when you buy the motherboard and processor. So you may end up spending 20-30 for a quad core intel with a motherboard.

In terms of price, yes that AMD CPU is better than the Intel quad-cores. Due to your limited budget and the parts you need, I couldn't fit in the Intel Q6600 plus a decent mobo. At $237, it's extremely hard to ignore such a great combo deal like the Phenom CPU and decent mobo considering that the Q6600 costs $190 by itself and there are no CPU/mobo combo deals for it right now.

The HD4850 is a better card as far as I can tell from the reviews I've seen of it

The HD4850 overall is a better and faster card than the 9800GTX which outperforms Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX in high resolutions and support of DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1 support

The source engine tends to lean toward the HD4800 series over the GTX 9800GTX, that said the 9800GTX+ usually pulls out an edge.

Thats a looks pretty good to me, but I think the XFX HD4850 is a better choice, comes with all of XFX's goodies, including the lifetime warranty, according to a press release.

Also, My stand-by case is the CM Elite RC-330, which can be had for ~$40 ($37 from NCIXUS, $44 from Newegg).

BFG has the 500W "GS" (which I havnt seen any reviews for but I think BFG's word these days is worth its salt) for $65, or the LS (which has been revied to much acclaim) for $55 after a $20 MIR. Both products can be found at newegg here. The case + the PSU should save you $20 off that antec combo, and if you go with the LS, give you something with a little more umph.

Ram Hunting is always fun, I'm betting you can find a cheaper kit if you look around. If your not OCing, get some DDR2 800 cas 5 or cas 4. The performance difference is almost non-existant so if it saves you more than a buck go for it.

My choice as well. But if the XFX isn't in stock at any site for that ~$165 when the OP orders, then I recommend getting the Sapphire card since it has free shipping

AFAIK, the GS series is BFG's low-end PSUs that's rated at peak and at 25C:

Doesn't really sound too good to me.

Actually it'll cost him an extra $15 if he goes with the BFG LS-550 and that CM Elite RC-330 once shipping is factored in (not counting rebates since they're not guaranteed). With that said, the OP does have a little wiggle room in his budget so he could go with either the Antec Sonata III case with EA500 500W PSU with its 34A on the 12V rail for $120 or the Elite RC-330 plus BFG LS-550 550W PSU with 40A on the +12V rail for around $140 shipped. More amperage on the +12V rail = usually more upgrades.
