My fiance's sister asked me to take a look at her laptop because it has been blue screening and giving other random errors. Eliminated spyware possibility and virus possibility. Such randoms errors left me thinking....decided to run memtest86....HOLY errors. I tried each ram chip by itself, but both are producing MANY errors during the tests. Just wanted everyones opinion as to what would cause both ram chips to go bad?

My first and only guess ( I have others but cant logically support them) would be heat. Some of those thing will put blisters on your thighs on a flight for NYC to ATL. I have seen little platforms with fans for them to help when they are sat flat on a desk etc.

If that one dosent get hot in its normal use - nevermind.

I agree very odd both die. Makes me very wary.

Not completely sure I would trust memtest with a laptop but thats because I am not a laptop expert. I would now try the windows memory tester just for the giggles.

Seems if memtest was throwing out that many errors it would not get past the POST memory test or if it did windows would crash at the drop of a hat. I I read somewhere that one of the tests can give a false postive (indicate errors when there are none) on some hardware. I want a second opinion.

If you can get in the bios and turn off quick boot so it will run the POST memory test on the screen that might help you decide if its really the memory.

anyway thats all I can think of. Good luck.

check to see if the laptop is under warranty, if it is, call and tell them your thoughts and see if they will just cross ship you the memory modules..

It is a dell that is no longer under warranty. Couldn't find the option to have the system mem test run on post. I am assuming the dell dumbed down way to enable this was to change the POST option from minimal to thorough. The POST progress bar does move a lot slower, so I am assuming it is running. Still trying to find how to exit the POST splash screen that dell loves. However, I did find a find a dell boot option for a diagnostic test, and the mem test within that program tested fine...I also used another utility that tested the memory fine. Also the dell diagnostic found some trouble with the HD. I am using a Norton Ghost boot cd that has chkdsk. It has found at least one bad sector. Which is weird, because I ran chkdsk from within windows and everything was fine. However, bad sectors seem more consistent with the way the machine is acting. Thanks for pointing out Memtest86 could be wrong. I have never used it, but everything I read stated it was accurate. I will let this chkdsk finish and see what the drive looks like. Thanks guys!
