Help! Sudden unkown overheat!

I have no idea what is causing this...

I have a Corsair Nautilus 500. It is filled with Liquid_XP extreme. As my signature says, I have a Kentsfield running stock in an EVGA NForce 68 board...


Up until today/yesterday? The idle temps for my cores were around 40 C. I lived with that...

However, I come home from work today to find my rig was off. I start up the PC and there is a definite mechanical hum comming from my nautilus. Starting temps were at 87 C!!!!

Sitting here, with trillian, Thunderbird, and Firefox on, typing this, I'm getting 97 C!!!

What is going on and what should I do??? The case feels fine temperature wise, the board is cool...

I'm going to turn off the comp as soon as I post this...


PLEASE ANY HELP ASAP WOULD BE APPRECIATED... I need this computer for school work and is the only one that can handle the load...

Also, I'm worried that because I used Liquid XP instead of water and their additive that they will tell me my warranty has been voided...
 
Yeah, that just struck me as the likely cause. I just e-mailed Corsair (haven't found a phone number yet)... but I'm still worried about that warranty.

Could my not having used the additive with water have caused the pump to break? It says it keeps the Copper block from reacting with aluminum parts, but my chemist father assured me that because I wasn't using water (propylene glycol most likely), that that kind of reaction was not a problem.


Okay, went to their forums and read about a similar problem and a fix (simply tilting the unit). They claim the pump was cavitating. However the people in question did not mention a temperature increase, and after trying this, it did not fix my problem.

Dammit... this looks like a week or so without my computer...
 
I don't think it is the pump cavitating, it wouldn't do that unless there was air in the loop. You probably need to RMA it.
 
Check your CPU block mount - may not of be touching the cpu.

Is there any visible indications of water flow? Are you using an accurate temp monitoring program (ie Core Temp/TAT?)
 
if it wasnt making contact then it would have been overheating from the begining. if it just started all of a sudden, look at the fluid is there movement? if not the pump probly burned out. dont worry about the warrenty fluid_xp is just as good / better then water, if they for some reason say not to use it or it voids the warrenty, flush it out with tap water real good before you RMA it, they will never know. and if it was cavitating the pump would be screaming you should notice it. if its silent then its not that
 
its gotta be either the pump has stopped pumping, and frankly I dont think it would get that hot as water is still in the block or ...

The stock block mounting for those things is pure crap, plastic motherboard standoffs that snap into hole in the board and a hole in the block retention plate. Bet one has come loose.

Get rid of that crap regardless of what the problem turns out to be.
$6.50 or a trip to Lowes.

a 4 foot threaded rod at home depot is $2.98- 12 pack of nuts is 98 cents. :p (i know because this is what i used when i lost one of the posts for my DD block )

The mounting is still solid, no slippage and the standoffs are in place. I'll most likely replace them with what you suggested Bill and Ghost.

Yeah, the pump was still making noise, but no liquid was moving whatsoever. In fact, it was noisier than it ever was. I called Corsair, didn't mention what type of fluid I'm using, and didn't even get to finish the description before they told me it was a dead pump and offered to RMA it.

Kinda makes me wonder if they run into that alot....

Anyways. Not too happy with how long it's going to take. 24 hours to send me the RMA instructions, 3 days to ship to them, 72 hours to process, and then 3 day shipping again...

I've got a stock Intel CPU Heatsink lying around that came with my Core Duo 6700. Hoping that will hold the temps at bay while I wait for this replacement. I had had plans to mod the Nautilus so it would cool better and make less noise... glad I waited so I still have that warranty.

The stock heatsink should be just fine as long as you're not OCed too much. Good luck with the RMA, im sure corsair is a lot better than other companies. (im still waiting after 1month for my video card back):mad:

Corsair is really good for RMA service.

that sounds exactly like air in the lines, i would check it out before you RMA it atleast. when pumps die they usualy completely die, no noise no movemet.
 
No air in the lines, even replaced all the fluid and tried again. Again no motion, and still that buzzing noise.

I did notice however that the fluid I replaced had some chunks of what looked like red flakes floating in it, and some other loose debris. Translucent and somewhat reddish. I know algae can be red, but I didn't think it was supposed to grow in Fluid XP. The metal cap to my resevoir was also ringed with reddish, almost rust colored stains. The largest part of the build up of debris was by the barb for the return tubing just before it reached the pump.

Is this the cause, or an effect? Or just something that I shouldn't really need to worry about.

Making due with that stock cooler right now. Idle temps at 67 C :-\ Better than burning out I guess. This will hold me until I get a replacement.

67C Idle? Dear god, the stock cooler isn't that bad... what temp monitoring program are you using? Something is seriously wrong there. Either probe or program..
 
I'm using Coretemp. I did use the paste that came pre-applied to the cooler, didn't bother with AS5 because I'm planning to replace it soon enough.

Can't really locate anything else that would be causing such a heat spike... this setup's been rather warm from that start however. I do know that the cabling leaves much to be desired... especially right now seeing as it is jury-rigged. I've got a pretty clear path from the intake 120mm fan to the inside of the case, however the 8800 GTS does sit right in front of that.

Everything else in the system runs rather cool. The 8800 does seem to idle around 50 - 60 however.

I've been thinking about possibly finding a different water cooling solution, or similar. I need low temps and low noise. I know the preferred method is to build it yourself, but I prefer tried and true methods (IE: custom made kits with how to's or prebuilt kits.)
 
if your getting near 70 idle with the stock heatsink im sorry to say this but you might have damaged the CPU by doing this:

the thermal shutdown on these chips is 85c if your running it close to 100 (the point water boils) you could have just fried the hell out of it. it may still work but theres no telling what kind of damage has been done. could very well explain high idle temps if you short circuted any one/a few of the serveral hundred million transistors.
when your house is on fire do you sit in your chair and yell "hey look at that thats not supposed to happen!" no you shut your computer down dummy! :p
 
Yeah, I'm not liking the possibility that the CPU could be damaged...

Btw, the comp was on for a total of 5 minutes when I turned it back on and made that post. I was in the middle of starting a post about the noise when i thought to check the temps. And from what I understand, the temperature limit range for the Kentsfields is between 95 C and 100 C, higher than it's Core 2 Duo brothers.

But I may indeed have a damaged CPU... I guess I'll find out when the new water cooler gets here. :-\.

The most expensive part of the whole freaking computer...


Booted it up, now running 58 C. Wish this thing would make up it's mind...
 
ah i missed the kentsfield part, but yea its still not a good thing. whered you get it from? can you try to RMA?
 
OEM on Newegg. Not sure about the RMA, still wanna find out how it does with the replacement Nautilus or a potentially new watercooling system. Seems the Nautilus is fine for running the Kentsfield at stock, but not much thermal headroom for overclocking, which will become important for me later on.
 
Sorry for the double post bump, but I still have a few questions.

Should I be concerned about the debris that I found in the liquid XP after I drained it from my system? Would it be a wise idea not to reuse the reclaimed coolant?

Also, is it really still possible that my CPU could be damaged if I have the BIOS set to turn my computer off if it reaches a dangerous temperature?

And yeah.. OEM Newegg CPU... I kinda already knew there was no chance of an RMA... I just had a complete brainfart when I replied before.

YES. Do not reuse it. Your performance will probably already be worse than air with the Nautilus, let alone with crap in your water.
 
This is ridiculous. I get an RMA number, get the instructions...


And they're instructions on how to return RAM modules. Not a a water cooler. No mentioning of what parts need to be included in the return. Do I keep my water block and just return the offending external unit? Do I send the main parts back but keep the smaller ones like one would with a sound card or video card? Do I send it in the original box? Well???

I've e-mail 3 times. I've posted on their support forums. It's been a week and I've heard nothing back. I've CALLED them... it asks me if I have an RMA number, then calls the "correct" area. Rings 8 times, pauses, and then loops back to the beginning message. Same thing for trying the tech support extension.

This is infuriating...

Anyone return one of these to Corsair before? Anyone know exactly WHAT they want? I really don't want to have to track down all the loose parts again...

Edit: Forgot to mention, it lists the correct unit on the RMA... it just gives me instructions on returning it as if it were a RAM module.
