Short story shorter, I have a drive that has been formatted that has data on it that i now need. You guys know of any software thats cheap or free that can recover the stuff on the drive. No data has been written to the drive since format. Ive been searching, but everything i find costs an arm and a leg, thx
 
What's your price limit? Also, was it a quick format or full format?

Assuming you can plug that drive in as a secondary drive somewhere, one option is to go with a free trial of R-Studio. (http://www.data-recovery-software.net/ ) The free trial won't recover anything, but can scan the disk and tell you what it can find. If the drive is only of one format (NTFS or FAT) you can buy that specific version for $50, if you think it is worth what it can recover.

If it was just a quick format, or even better, just deleting the partition without creating a new one, something like Active Partition Recovery could do the trick. (http://www.partition-recovery.com/)
 
Another vote for GetDataBack (my boss loved it when I recovered her 30gb of MP3's)
