I've been spending a significant amount of time trying to figure out what the perfect IPS monitor would be.

My requirements are:
- IPS display
- LED (for power consumption)
- Good for console gaming (I want to hook up my xbox 360)

I currently use an older Dell 2407wfp and it is not all that great, but works. It's developed a yellow line when cold so it seems like a good time to upgrade.

The Dell U2412 seems like the best fit - any other suggestions?

I was REALLY interested in the new HP IPS LED but it seems like the xbox 360 can't run on that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i think the only option you have in LED is zr2440 and the mini displayport ACD. the 2412hm won't do 1:1 in 1080p, the zr2740 doesn't seem to work with my xbox, and the u2711 is CCFL...

The Samsung S27A850D is PLS (same as IPS) has 1:1 and supports consoles. It is semi-glossy so the image won't look grainy/dirty/chrystalized like all of the matte IPS panels which are granier than the Dell 2407. Just make sure you can get it from a retailer due to quality control issues/backlight bleeding (same thing applies to IPS) with a good return/exchange policy like Buy.com for US buyers.

so...

the xbox actually works fine on the zr2740w in 720p. i just needed to reset the display settings on the console.

oops!

Thanks for the heads up.

With the scaler, how much lag will be introduced?

I am looking at the Samsung PLS and the HP ZR2440W/ZR2740W

Tough picking between the two. The HP ZR2440W seems relatively well priced at ~425.

I'd go for the ZR2440W personally. Why spend $800.00+ on a display with spotty quality control just to get smoother anti-glare?

The U2412M does work with Xbox 360 perfectly fine as the 360 can output 1680x1050 and introduce black bars on its own to simulate 16:9 on a 16:10 only display, but I'd still recommend the ZR2440W because it has DisplayPort, DVI, and HDMI which are better options for a console setup.

if you're going to do a lot of console gaming, i would stick to displays that can do 1:1 1080p, personally. in fact, i'd heavily consider the dell 2312hm since it seems to be nearing 200 this holiday season.

The ZR2440W obviously has to scale and can't do 1:1 - how much lag would be introduced?

With the U2412M with the xbox set to 1680x1050, that seems like a pretty good solution.

I was looking at the 2312hm also, that seems like a fairly promising route as well.

So now I am looking at the ZR2440W, U2412M, or the 2312HM.

Any other thoughts between those three?

I'd take the ZR2440W unless you can find the U2312HM for very cheap. It doesn't matter if it does 1:1 as long as it does proper aspect ratio scaling meaning it can preserve the aspect ratio and output at full width with black bars top and bottom, because you want a monitor to preserve the 16:9 aspect ratio. I believe the HP ZR2440w does this.

That being said, the Xbox 360 is better than the PS3 with monitors because it can actually output a 16:10 screen and introduce black bars for you by outputting 1680x1050 and not having issues with vertical stretching.

I've tested this and it works fine with the Dell U2412M.

My opinion is that while I don't have an issue with 16:9 displays, I'd take the 16:10 monitor for the extra vertical real estate for PC use.

Thanks for the very helpful advice.

So at 285.92 for the U2412M vs. 426.32 for the ZR2440w it seems like it's a no brainer to go with the U2412M? No?
So the U2412M at 285.92

Get the U2312hm instead. The 2412 is useful if you want 16:10,but the 2312 correctly supports the xbox's maximum resolution.
