Right now im running the following setup

Win XP (3 day old install, first time using it)
256MB of RAM
SBLive! 5.1 platinum
Asus a7v (i think thats the important info)

Anyway, for some reason sounds will slow down or make an odd noise at apparently random times. It SEEMS that when this happens, cpu usage jumps a bit too (from say 7% to 16).

Ive got no programs that i know of that could be causing this, ive tried 2 sets of creative drivers with no help

is this a known issue, is there some kind of fix i can download?

Sorry if this is the wrong place, i dont know where else to post.

Try getting george breese PCI latency patch, and make sure you have the newest 4 in 1's. On some configuartions the installer sometimes wont work. Youll need to do that manually (sometimes)

Make sure your sb live isnt sharing irqs with anything else.

You're about to find out that XP and Creative Labs suck together (as for support). . . performance-wise you should be fine. Make sure you've windows-updated, and only use the newest creative drivers and software.

I did not have that exact problem, but I had quite a few back before SP1. . . ended up trading some other hardware for a gametheatre XP and never looked back.

ive upgraded to the newest 4 in 1's and sb live drivers, i even tried older drivers just to see. the only thing, it seems, i havent tried is that pci latency patch

another problem is freezing, this damn thing freezes all the time, ill have to work on that.

This sound card has always given me trouble, i don't see me buying any more creative products unless necessary in the future.

I hear that - it's sad, because they make good products, they just can't support them - so they're only good for a few months IF they work out of the box. . . so much potential replaced by too much fluff and not enough performance.

go a google for ctcomp

if you can find say the 383 drivers and mod them for use with sblive, that would be killer. i had issues with all sblive drivers. the problem was majorly better with 283s but not completely gone. with 383s, its like it was supposed to be ;)

Try putting the SB in another PCI slot. They can be really picky with what slot you have them in and if there are any other cards near. SB Live cards and some VIA chipset boards do not work very well together.

I used to run an SB Live Value and two different VIA AMD chipset boards and never had a single problem with the mix. I guess I just got lucky or something.

Honeslty, am I the only one on earth that hasnt had ONE problem with my SB Live! 5.1? The thing works awsome.

Until that one day it climbs out and klls you in your sleep

I do agree about the PCI slot issue - they are pretty picky so moving it around is definitely a good idea - check for IRQ conflicts in hardware manager too.

I always use PCI Slot #2 when the VIA+Creative combo is present, never had a problem this way.

OldMX

I had the same problem, though I narrowed it down to when I was heavily using one of the hard drives this would occur.

I changed pci bus master caching from disabled to enabled and pci bus master timeout from disabled to 001.

This was after It persisted despite me installing the via latency patch and updating 4 in 1s etc etc etc.

luck !

I'm currently running XP Pro and an SB Live 5.1 card and I have never had a problem with two together. I've been running them since XP came out. At the moment, since I'm not at that computer, I don't know what drivers I have for the SB Live card but I can look tonight after work and post tomorrow if anyone's interested. I do know that I'm not running the latest drivers though. In fact, I think that the last time I did a reformat and reinstall of XP I just used the drivers that came with XP for my SB Live card.

In my case I will always buy Creative sound cards because I've never once had an issue with any of their sound cards.

those drivers are pathetic and dont utilize any of the sblive's features though :(

Maybe XP's drivers for the SB Live card don't really use the features of the card but they do work. Before my last reinstall, however, I was using regular SB Live drivers and they worked just fine in XP as well. I didn't have time lastnight to find out what version I was using before the reinstall but I know that I had never upgraded the drivers for the Live card and so they were the original version drivers that came with my card. I don't know why but I've never upgraded the drivers for my sound cards over the years. I think I just kind of forget about the sound card since it always seems to work.

I hate my SB Live 5.1. It would make these annoying noise when I am online. I think it is because I am on wirelessly. But yeah, that freaking ticking has gots to go. I tried different PCI slots, but no luck. I agree regarding the suckiness of SB Live 5.1!!

it really dependson your application. the digital out doesnt work for most speaker systems. it cant render correctly. it hogs cpu. yeah... its a pain in the ass. but if you have a simple system and dont challenge it that much, i suppose its fairly stable. it does crackle for me too though. i guess its all a tradeoff for stability
