Some friends and I were discussing the golden oldie RPG's, such as the Ultima series (up through 7), Bard's Tale, etc.

There was one rpg that was available as Shareware and was eventually picked up by one of the big companies after awhile. It was a 3d rpg along the same style as Bard's Tale, but required Direct X 6.0 or better (IIRC). Most of us had played it, but none of us could remember the name!

If anyone can remember what the name of this old 3d RPG from the mid or late 90's is called, please help!!

That is incredibly vague, do you remember any details at all. Even how a scene looked, or a weapon in the game, or any story elements?

I think there was some sort of jail or cages where you could "hire" various monsters at times, but they were hideously expensive. The Shareware version only allowed you to wander the top 5 or so levels of the dungeon.

It was a 1st person 3d rpg, and you had a party of up to 6 I think. I don't remember any of the spells, weapons, armor.

Sorry, what I've given you is all we could remember of it, other than it was fun. We weren't sure, but we thought it might have been Interplay or EA that bought the game from the original creator. Can't look it up on their sites though: Interplay is gone, and EA doesn't keep stuff around that isn't current.

Dungeon Master didn't require DirectX Anything, though. Could you be talking about Demise, sequel to Mordor? But then again hardly anybody played that game.

It wasn't a mainstream game like all those. Like I said, it was a shareware game for a long time before being bought by one of the big (at the time, dunno about now) game companies, but I don't think anything was actually ever done with it. I don't believe it ever hit store shelves, it was internet only.

Most games "in that style" released during the 90's never got touched by one of the game companies, and most RPG's that were handled by the game companies never started as shareware. I was hoping that would be the biggest clue to remembering the name.

Any more guesses? This is REALLY bugging the snot out of us!

Well, if you are correct about DirectX 6 being required then that means the game was probably released in 1999 or 2000.

Does that jive with what you recall?

There are few clues to make an educated guess at it, try RPG forums there's people there that played them all most likely or at least heard of that game you've mentioned

If it truly was from the 1999-2000 time frame as evidenced by the DirectX 6.0 requirement it would have been in the Planescape: Torment, NOX, Arcanum & Anachronox days. Is it anyone of those?

I thought shareware died in the early to mid 90's. Are you sure it used directx? Could it be Ancients 1: Death Watch or Ancients 2: Approaching Evil?

No, it wasn't Ancients. Shareware has never died...you can still find plenty of things in various genres.

Something Heatsinker said rang a very small bell, and after some searching I think we might have the answer.

Morder II: Darkness Awakening looks VERY close to what we had played...I must have completely misremembered which version of DX it required, because Morder II was out in 1998. I believe the game was probably Mordor: Depths of Dejenol. When we were trying to remember, we completely ignored this particular name because of the seeming Tolkien link.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help, and big thanks to Heatsinker for kicking me in the pants with his suggestion.

my roommate used to play something called Tibia....it was freeware originally i believe, and remained "free" with the option to pay to access the entire game later on down the line i think. i never played it myself, but from watching him play it a few times it sounds similar to what you were describing imo.

.....though now that i think about it, it's actually an MMO, so i doubt it's what you're looking for.

There was a spaceship game that was online only back in the day - make money for every shot at another ship. Fun game

Tibia looks a lot like an older game called Legends of Kesmai, which is still being played in some places.
