help me select video card ?

I don't game, but I do watch standard dvd's on a 1360x768 32" lcd via vga. I also watch hd vids from the internet (flash, mpg, wmv, etc.). PC is a Compaq SR1830NX w/ AMD 64 3500+ and ATI Radeon Xpress 200. I want to get the best card for around $50-ish (I only paid $100 for the entire PC!). I'm thinking Radeon HD 4000 or 5000 series. I really don't want to upgrade the PS right now. I think it's 300 watts.
Opinions?

Which 300W PSU?

The HD 5450 should be enough for your needs.

probably a hi-pro since thats the most common one that I have seen in HP/Compaq comps. no matter what brand its going to have the same specs though.

why would he need anything more than the X200 for those basic needs though?

Yeah I'd also recommend the HD 5450. Toms Hardware has a recent (2/4/10) review of it if you want to read some more information about it and see some performance figures.
 
Do you think with my system and that card, full screen hd video (flash, mpg, wmv, etc.) will play smoothly? What would be the next step up from this card considering my 300 watt psu?

The HD 5450 is as far as I'd recommend with that low quality 300W PSU. A good quality 300W PSU would more than likely be enough for a HD 5750. But since that's a Compaq, it more than likely comes with a low quality 300W PSU.

As long as you setup HD playback correctly, your PC with that card will be able to playback HD content just fine.
 
I am also tring to get the 5450 i think its a great bang for the buck, and i personally would go with the 450w 80+ PSU

I wound up ordering a Gigabit Radeon HD 4550 512MB 64-bit DDR3 for $20 after rebate. I *think* it is fairly close to the 5450 in terms of performance.
