Help me prepare for Amnesia

Towards the end of the game I came across the main monster dudes, and I got stuck in a corner. Well they also glitched out and couldn't get to me so all I heard was the buzzing sound, their monster sounds n shit, it was so scary. OMG shit

I lost track of time playing Oblivion last night and never started up Amnesia.

So, tonight is the night. I'm a little excited about all of this. The last "scary" game I played was Clive Barker's Undying. Great game btw. What really doesn't help is having seen Insidious last weekend.

So anxious!

I remember I used to be scared of the water monster in the first half-life.
Everytime I saw water I was like "oh no, please god not another one"

The same goes for me and head crabs. That sound they make before they strike makes my skin crawl.

When I saw the plush ones, I nearly died.

Condemned was very good actually, generally speaking you used melee weapons for most of it, and guns were very rare, and ammo limited. There was some fantastic set pieces to scare you in that.

Agreed - I still think it was the scariest game I've played. They did such a great job with the sound and the ability for enemies to sneak up on you only to let out a crazy yell followed by a beatdown. Even though you really only had a few enemies beyond the normal crazy people, I was always afraid of what might be ahead. That final house was pretty epic.

Much like Amnesia, it requires a Creative card for multi-channel sound and it doesn't support a pad (which works very well since the game is 99% melee), so the PC version isn't quite as awesome as it could be. The console versions are only like $5 now, though.

I played the greater part of the game during a weekend of drinking, and the alcohol really ruined the experience in hindsight. It defeats the purpose of a game like Amnesia if you partake of the liquid courage while playing.

Even if the fool in that video was purposefully exaggerating, that was nothing but massively fucking annoying and ridiculous.

There's no way I could imagine his reactions even being real in the first place. Seriously? People are that prone to fear to that degree? Talk about a weak-minded species...

Sure he may be exaggerating, but you have no idea what extended periods of playing this game can do to your sanity (literally and in-game). Then again, no community would be complete without that condescending jerk who holds himself above everyone else. :)

But its more true to life then ;)

Your responses have made me finally download it on my Steam account (bought during xmas sale). Forcing the wife to turn off the laptop and "play this cool game with me!"

EDIT: Made my wife sit with me in the dark while I started up the game. At first, I kept waiting for things to jump out and scare her, but that never happened. After about half an hour of walking around and trying to figure stuff out, she had to brush her teeth. The environment, though graphically at least six years old, was very believable. The combination of the sounds and vision effects started to take its toll on my nerves. And I usually consider myself a tough guy when it comes to stuff like this. I played through Condemned 1 and 2 in the dark by myself and this beats those in creep factor by a long shot.

Five minutes later as my wife was coming out the bathroom and into bed, my reaction is "Let's play another five minutes! Please!" With it being 12:45p on a work night for her (spring break for me) I had to let her go. I went back to playing and not three minutes later, I turned the corner and saw something that made me experience\ a full body chill. I actually had to hit escape for pause and jump out of my seat, onto the bed, and into the covers. I was laughing as I did this, but for god's sake, I'm a grown man!

Played another five minutes by myself (just entered the wine cellar) and just couldn't play anymore. I didn't understand why a couple people in this thread said that they had to turn it off after XX number of minutes. Now I do!

Not gonna play this again until tomorrow night when she gets off work. (and just turned on the lights again)

lol :D
yep, scary game is scary :p

I haven't played this game because for the most part I dont like scary games (dont like trudging around in the dark, would rather play the big tough hard arse walking around wailing on everyone), but with all the comments people make about I feel like I should give it a try to see how long I can play it before I decide its too scary :p

man, i hate scary games. when i played doom 3, which most of you wouldnt call that scary probably, i got to the part 7:56 in, when you walk down that corridor and see the zombiethingie with its back to you. i thought, well thats nice, just walk up to him and kill him, then the lights went out and you could only hear the grunting and the steps of that thing coming towards you. couldnt play on anymore. been avoiding scary games ever since.

i think i might be able to play amnesia if a friend is sitting next to me; that would make it more of a funny experience than scary. what do you guys think?
