Currently downloading Amnesia The Dark Descent from Amazon and I plan to play it tonight after work.

Here are my plans

1. Close office door
2. Turn off the lights
3. Put on headphones
4. Adjust volume
5. Start up Amnesia
6. Adjust brightness/contrast settings as recommended
7. Tighten butt cheeks
8. Start the game

Am I missing anything? Is a nightlight warranted? Should I play this sober or drunk?

Tips. Warnings. Prayers. All welcomed.

Well well well, you are in for a treat :)
grab a jar of Vaseline, you'll need it if one of those monsters catches you, cuz they're gonna tenderly luv u :D

make sure you download the lastest patch, there are some important fixes

I tried playing the demo on my laptop (Intel C2D 2.6, 8800M GTX, 4GB RAM), and even at lowest resolutions the game was a slideshow.

It was disappointing as the recent 'scariest moments' thread pointed me to this game.

You'll have to let us know how it is, OP!

Woa, really? My rig ran the full game perfectly well with C2D 2,6ghz (unclocked e6750), 2gb ram and 8800gt (a tidbit faster than 8800m gtx) at 1680x1050.

Texas, make sure you have SSAO turned off. For some reason, they include the option for 128 samples of SSAO, which even brings my SLI GTX 570 system to a crawl.

Good luck, I could not even make it through the demo..I guess i'm a wuss or whatever. I was like "Okay thats enough!" and turned it off. For whatever reason that demo really fucked with my head lol.

While I know that they favor headphones, I really do wish surround sound worked with hardware other than Creative Labs cards.

Wow, that's awesome. Don't think I could be too freaked out about anything soon after hearing that.

Do it sober, and one of the things that work with anything scary is adjusting the room temperature, try opening the window letting in a chill breeze enchanting the horror you are about to feel.

Too bad meth is illegal* or I'd say a three-day binge, or whatever length of time is enough to bring on symptoms of paranoia.

*It also ruins your health, teeth and appearance, and you bleed acid through your pores. But gaming occasionally requires minor sacrifices like this.

If you don't get the adult diaper, at least have a cleanup kit on hand for emergencies.

I wish I could get in contact with one of your coworkers and have them stay late to mess with you. You would shit bricks if they timed it right.

Not a fan of Adventure/puzzle games but $10 on Steam right now. I'm tempted to check it out.

What the hell, for $10 I went for it.

If you get TOO freaked out, you can always alt+tab and play this in the background.

It helped me get through a few parts.

This needs to be a mod for the game where they play the Ghostbusters movies soundtrack (plus the cartoon soundtrack) and give you a proton pack and particle thrower as you run through Amnesia. The last boss would be awesome as he's giving the speech and you just suck him into the ghost trap.

oh yes!! you need to be coooold!!
turn on the air conditioner ;)

Also, if you are too spooked to keep playing, just remember the monster is just a bunch of polygons.

It should be pretty cool/cold tonight, in the 50's I think.

Office window will be open!

Battle it with humour - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loSzpvq73FY

(Don't watch that if you don't want to see in game scares before you play)

Even if the fool in that video was purposefully exaggerating, that was nothing but massively fucking annoying and ridiculous.

There's no way I could imagine his reactions even being real in the first place. Seriously? People are that prone to fear to that degree? Talk about a weak-minded species...

I'm sorry if you are such a mighty and courageous fellow. A lot of people have found that video hilarious and the game is genuinely frightening. I personally cannot play it at all.

I enjoyed the game. I didnt find it quite suspenseful and scary throughout, however with all the comments about it being one of the scariest games they had ever played I was actually a little disappointed. Dont get me wrong, I still had a fun time playing it. I guess some people just get scared alot easier than others. Also, oddly enough, everyone else apparently about shit bricks at the water monster. To me that part was more annoying than scary.

Personally I can't even play Metro 2033 without being scared to death. Same goes for Dead Space. They stress me out too much to be enjoyable.

I remember when I first played 7th Guest as a kid. I was literally traumatized.

Dead Space was scary for the first 30 minutes, then the feeling of dread and fear quickly subsided.

I've been contemplating getting Amnesia for a while, and this thread finally pushed me to get it. I've got all of the essentials, minus the depends.

Some people can get immersed into fantasy worlds far easier than others, and feel for their characters, sometimes even believe they are their characters are an extension of themselves. This can make fear in games much more real for these people, I should know, I'm one of them!

Check out www.mackandmesh.co.uk they do a series of scary games with someone who gets very scared playing them, well worth watching for a laugh.

Because you're armed to the teeth and shallow ACTION games ultimately aren't scary, it's hard to be scared of monsters when you're a bad ass wielding plasma cutters and full body armour etc.

That's true, but I found condemened to be pretty scary, you have weapons but that scared the shhit out of me just watching others play it. Also Call of Cthulu is so damn scary and even though you have guns, they are pretty pointless :p. I think amnesia looks scary, but I am not a big fan of not being able to do anything against the enemies :/

Condemned was very good actually, generally speaking you used melee weapons for most of it, and guns were very rare, and ammo limited. There was some fantastic set pieces to scare you in that.

I remember I used to be scared of the water monster in the first half-life.
Everytime I saw water I was like "oh no, please god not another one"

Be prepared for a visceral and moody experience! As far as well made horror games go, this is one of the best!
