Hi there. I'm finally ready to upgrade my trusty old Radeon HD4850 Silent Edition and i'm trying to decide between these two cards:

Either a Gigabyte HD6770 or a Powercolor HD6850. I know the HD6850 would be faster, but i'd save around 50 bucks going with the HD6770. Is the 6770 actually an upgrade over a 4850? Would I notice the difference, or should I save up for the powercolor? Thanks.
 
Overclock that CPU and get a 6850. It's worth the extra $50. I'd say performance-wise, the 6770 is about the same as a 4890.
 
What's your budget and what is your resolution?

Another area of concern is your power supply - A 500W PSU is recommended for the 6850, and your Antec Earthwatts is 380W. Should probably look into that as well.

Now, as far as your choice, Cruis is right about the 6770 comparing to the 4890, but it still isn't a large enough jump from your 4850. The 6870 would give a nice jump in performance.

Now get on that CPU and overclock the dick out of it.

Not really, the HD6770 is less than 20% faster than the HD4850. The HD6850 is about 60% faster, so will be an appreciable improvement.

A 380W PSU is plenty to run an HD6850, he's got loads of room there. With a stock X4 610e and an HD6850, he'll probably only be drawing about 180W from the wall at gaming load. You could probably hack a 250W mini-ITX PSU to run a system like this.
 
HD6870 isn't one of the options listed in the post, but would present an even higher improvement, around 100%. That would not be an issue for wattage (again, you'll be seeing 220W or so tops out of the PSU under load), but you will need two PCIe 6-pins to run it, and the 380W Earthwatts only has one, so an adapter will need to be used.
 
Sorry meant 6850. 6870 is of course a bigger improvement as samuelmorris mentions but perhaps way out of your price range OP
 
Wow, this helps me out a lot thanks! Im glad I asked before buying anything. Im gonna go with the hd6850, a 60% improvement would be incredible. Im scared to overclock because stability is my #1 concern. I think my cpu is fine for now cause I mainly play gtaiv, and the athlon II wasnt even out yet when that game was released.
 
No problem, I'd say if you were playing nothing but GTA4 get a GTX460 as they perform unusually well in GTA4 due to the way it's coded, but they're even more of a pain to get working with a 380W PSU, so probably not the best idea.
