Hi, going to be buying an SFF...no i dont want to build, thanks...anyway out of the loop for a while here. I have been looking on the AVA website and i have choices of..

Intel Xeon, dual or quad core?
Intel Core Two Extreme or..
Core™ 2 Duo, Core™ 2 Quad

Any help here. Gaming and Photoshop/Lightroom
Totally lost on what these choices mean.

thanks...but i am kind of looking for an easy guide to what each one is and does. I mean you say go for the quad, but Xeon or Core 2?...whats the difference?
 
Xeons are Intel's server grade CPUs. Xeon CPUs are usually higher-binned, meaning that there's lesser chance of a CPU failure with them. They come in both socket 771 and socket 775 motherboards. Socket 775 Xeons are compatible with most consumer grade socket 775 motherboards. There are Xeon versions of Core 2 Duos and Quads but the performance is virtually the same. So no reason to get a Xeon CPU unless you have a server, can't find its regular desktop counterpart or can find it cheaper than the regular Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad CPUs.

Core 2 Extremes are the high end multiplier unlocked Intel CPUs. Usually cost in the $1000 range. They are not the worth the price whatsoever. Unless you can get the Core 2 Extreme CPUs for significantly less (sub $300), no point in going with those Extreme CPUs unless you have a ton of cash to waste.

Core 2 Duos are the mainstream Intel dual core CPUs. Core 2 Quads are the mainstream quad-core Intel CPUs.

Since you're using Photoshop and Lightroom, a Core 2 Quad CPU, like the Q6600, is the better choice for you.
 
To summarize what danny said: Xeons and Core 2 Extremes are much more than you need, and too expensive. The plain old Core 2 Quad however, is cheaper, and powerful enough to not only run photoshop, but any game in today's market. The Q6600 is the cheapest (I think) Core 2 Quad, and possesses massive overclocking potential, so even though you are spending drastically less on your cpu, you can get the same speed as higher-end cpu's.
 
just curious but when will the August price drops on the Q9550 take effect with Ava?
