Help me figure out this performance issue

Specs in sig.

I have been enjoying the new Red Orchestra 2 for the last couple of weeks, but I am haviong some really strange performance issues I have never seen before.

First off, depending on what I look at, at 2560x1600 on my two R6970's in Crossfire I never get above 66fps (on high settings, not ultra). It often dips down into the 50s, and sometimes the 40s.

The amazing oddity is, if I monitor the video cards, the GPU utilization on either card never goes above 40%.

Then I thought it must be a CPU bottleneck, but looking at the CPU loads in Task Manager, the heaviest loaded core is only at about 50-60%...

Vsync isn't on...

I just can't figure this one out. In ever other game run, unless I intentionally limit the FPS (either through Vsync or engine limit) the video cards will go balls out at 99-100%...

Does anyone have nay ideas?

Much obliged,
Matt

Are you running the latest CAP that was released about a week ago? 11.9 CAP 1.. It lists improved Crossfire Performance in RO2 in the release notes/added profiles. Another thing you could try doing is get RadeonPro and make a profile for RO2 and force a different CFX profile on the game to see if it works. Up until lately I had to force AFR-Friendly D3D Profile for BC2

Yep, just got that CAP. Performance is similar to when I forced the Crossfire profile for bioshock (recommended in steam forums).

Still, the GPU's are maxing out at 40% util...

Powertune set to +20?

This, also try the AFR-Friendly D3D CFX Profile in RadeonPro. Are your cards OC'd at all? If they are, try them at stock speeds. Another thing you could try is to alt-tab out and then back into the game, this works for me with Alien Swarm to get Crossfire working/scaling properly

my best advice is to wait a couple of more weeks. They've been putting out patches every week since release, for all kinds of issues - the cpu optimization should be high priority after the stats got fixed

what is the gpu utilization when running with a single card? perhaps it only a cfx issue.

Probably a crossfire issue, unless the cards are overclocked, I never see 6970s breach their TDP limit. Do you see 100% on the one card with crossfire disabled?

I'm not familiar with powertune. Would you mind helping me out with a few more details?

I may try this. I used Radeonpro to apply the Bioshock profile before the new CAP's were released, as this was recommended in the forums, but stopped doing this once the CAP's supporting RO2 came out. There doesn't appear to be a huge difference between the two.

My last patch the other day was 3.4GB

I figured all that stuff would be solved by now, but I'm patient, hopefully these things get fixed in time.

I actually haven't tried this. I can disable CFX and give it a try. The cards are not currently overclocked, as none of the games I am currently playing benefit from it.

Thank you for your suggestions guys. I'll report back when I've tested.

So I disabled CFX and did a quick test.

Without CFX enabled my framerate is pretty much identical to what it was when CFX was enabled.

My primary GPU is now loaded between 95% and 100% all the time (the secondary is - of course - at 0%) and the game runs A MILLION times better. It is smooth now, where it was jerky before, despite the framerate being the same.

Yes, there must definitely be some crossfire issues in this game.

I am pretty new to the crossfire world. Do they typically fix issues like this relatively quickly?

So it turns out the AMD video card drivers and Crossfire profiles are not the issue.

Red Orchestra 2 and its 64 player maps, coupled with rather high detail is simply VERY CPU intensive. This is exacerbated by the fact that it is DX9 only, and DX9 is limited to only one CPU thread for draw calls. (if they had used DX11, these calls would be automatically split up on multiple threads).

So what this means is that my Phenom II X6, even at 4Ghz is simply not sufficient to power though this game without occasionally dropping into the mid 40's FPS wise.

This was masked by the fact that the windows scheduler keeps switching the game thread around between the cores faster than the task manager updates its CPU load charts, so it never looked like any individual core was maxed out.

The game also uses PhysX for physics acceleration, but doesn't disable it if you don't have hardware acceleration, but rather just computes the same physics on the CPU further exacerbating the problem.

What all this means is that a high clocked Sandy bridge CPU couple with a Nvidia GPU will probably get the best results in this game.

Their support guys in the Tripwire forum's say the devs are "looking into a DX11 patch" to help with this issue. I hope they do! I don't know what the chances are considering the game is made on the pretty old Unreal 3 engine.

At least right now, I can max out all the settings at 2560x1600 without

Yeah Red Orchestra 2 is really CPU intensive:

Compulsary PhysX is a royal pain in the arse, but usually there are some cfg hacks to get rid of it, iirc.

It's too bad I don't have any free PCIe slots (two are unused, but they are blocked). I have a spare GTX460 just sitting here (I may use it in a build for one of my stepsons) I could use for PhysX.

Where did you find this review? I googled a bit and couldn't find any good ones...

gamegpu.ru - they cover a considerable number of games with a wide range of hardware. It's in russian, but google translate helps, and the graphics are obvious enough.

Ahh thank you. I wonder why they didn't show up in my searches. (maybe because of the language?)

Quite possibly, I'm not sure how I first encountered it, I remember it being about the time Bad Company 2 was in beta (shows you how long ago it was!). I think that benchmark is probably what made them famous (since removed in favour of the benchmark of the full game)

What's interesting to me is that they appear to be getting worse results for RO2 with a Radeon 6970 at 1280x720 than I get at 2560x1600...

Maybe the several game and driver updates since launch have changed things a lot!

They might be testing a more demanding section of the game. Also, GameGPU don't test at 1280x720?

Maybe put it down to early drivers, as when they tested the game had no crossfire support. The geforces only do about 20% better though.

Probably.

The launch day functionality of this game was nothing to write home about.

It's better now, but still has room for some improvement.
