Building an AMD system. Gotta be good enough to last a few years.

Hopin people will give suggestions as to what I should be investing in.

I've been informed that the Athlon XP 2400+ was a good chip right now. Are there any others out there that are faster and would maybe out perform it and would be NEAR the same price?

I'm clueless as to what motherboard to get. I haven't been keeping up with what's hot and whats not in a lot of these areas lately and need help. Mobo?

Vid Card; prett much decided on ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 256MB.

PSU dont really matter, im gettin a 400W PSU but are there any out there i should stay away from? or should snag?

Memory: If I dont get Corsair what should I go for? I'm lookin to have at the very least 512MB DDR.

Friend told me to get SLK-800 heatsink.

I guess i mostly need help with CPU, Mobo, and Mem

As for Motherboards, I'd go with something with an nForce2 400 chipset from either Asus or Abit

The 2500+ bartons are probably the best processor to look at

Memory, if you don't go Corsair (why not) go Crucial

Power Supply: Go with the Antec True Power Series. They kick ass and the one I have is exponentially quieter than the Sparkle one that I had.
 
I would go with the DFI over the abit or asus. People have been getting higher fsb and have less trouble with compatibilty.

NFII Ultra Infinity is $95.
 
Don't get the 256MB 9600 Pro. It's slower than the 128MB version.
 
how about a budget and a list of what you need. ill make out a newegg 'wish list' for part to suggest. so far you need motherboad, cpu, and memory.... anything else?
 
ok $600 budget, if it goes over let it, just not over $800.

I am in the same boat as you. In looking at newegg, I see this mobo....

Asus nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "A7N8X-X"

Decent price and it has the following which appears, from my limited knowledge to cover every range out there as far as FSB and DDR goes.

FSB: 400/333/266/200MHz
RAM: 3x DIMM for DDR400/333/266/200

Wonder if anyone knows why this ISN'T a good deal/mobo to get?

Yeah I was lookin at that same mobo man. A guy posted earlier that that's a good chipset.....i might go for it
 
the a7n8x series is a great chipset, just isnt that great for overclocking which leads me to my next question for you FatteyMattey...

what is the computer planned to be used for? like overclocking, gaming, video/picture editing, email/internet. wanted to know this so you dont spend money where it isnt needed. or if you just want the best for your budget thatll work too.
 
Primary concern is gaming. Sry, forgot to mention that.

Anybody have any thoughts on this memory?

Alright, I'm stuck. Looks like I got everything set except the motherboard and the processor. Both in which I'm not quite sure where to go. I was thinkin about the AMD Barton cpu....

suggestions? mainly on mobo?
