I've done a fair bit of looking around and I've come down to these two options..

Intel system:

CPU:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0G-C (800Mhz FSB)

MOTHERBOARD:
Asus P4P800 DLX

AMD system:

CPU:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+

MOTHERBOARD:
ABIT KV8 Athlon 64 Motherboard - VIA K8T800, FSB 800MHz, DDR400, 8x AGP, SATA RAID, 6Ch AC97, µGuru, OTES

The AMD system ends up slightly cheaper, which one should I go for?

I've heard that Intel holds over 90% of the market. AMD users are rebels. :)

lol Celeron?

I'll be using the pc for producing music, programming and the odd bit of gaming

For what you're going to be doing, I'd say go Intel. Multi-tasking is smoother on the intel. You're probably going to be happy with either tho.

pentiums seem to run a little quicker w/ multimedia encoding/decoding aps. amd a little quicker with gaming... the amd runs cooler.

AMD usually dominates intel in compiler benches though, so if you want to do more programming than multimedia, I'd say AMD. Otherwise, if you want more multimedia, I'd go with the others and say Intel.

Are you kidding?

Anyway, I know AMD and Intel chips run differently, but I've been comparing prices, and for the price of an Athlon XP 3000+, which is about 2.0 GHz, you can buy a Pentium 4 roughly 2.8 GHz.

Are these ratings different, or is my temptation to get a faster processor for the same price starting to lean me towards Intel?

Wth are you smoking? a little quicker with gaming? AMD blows intel in gaming, not just by benchmarks, but my 'feeling'.

Save yourself some money and go AMD.

I'd go with an AMD64 if producing music. The Opterons are used in high end audio workstations, so I'd say the Athlon 64s would still be pretty good.

Compiling programs probably don't matter. I doubt you'd be compiling a huge program on the scale of xorg-x11 or mozilla firefox all the time.

And gaming, AMD64.

I think most ppl would agree that the best buy would be an Athlon 64 754pin system.

And as well I think most ppl would also agree the best buy Athlon 64 754pin cpu would be between the 3000 or the 3200 depending on the person.

AMD...but then again, I'm a biased fanatic..besides, it's about $50 cheaper for the AMD setup...you could use that and get a Clwahammer core with 1MB L2 ;)

The A64s are faster at compiling due to twice the number of registers than a P4, I believe that gaming is better due to the onbaord memory controller so you lose a huge bottleneck right there.

But AMD all the way, best proc I have ever had.

Don't start out fresh with a XP. It's not worth it. The XP's ratings were a little overexagerated when compared to the P4's. This exageration really came to light when Intel came out with the Northwood cores and 800 FSB. A Athlon64 2800 will outperform a XP3200 and a P4 2.8 plain and simple.

I cant wait to see the P4 4GHz 1066MHz FSB with .09 micron..

But it won't be 64-bit..

The AMD system gives you the benefit of 64-bit computing, so it will last a long time with 64-bit programs and operating systems coming out soon. While the P4 is clearly better in multimedia, the AMD is better in the rest. And it will will give you a long life with all the 64-bit programs coming out, longer than the 32-bit P4.
If you're looking at a bit of gaming, what vid card are you looking at? And RAM? I would recommend at least 1gig of PC3200, esp. for multimedia and programming. And because the AMD system is cheaper, you can get more good stuff cause you have more money to use.

*drools*

Well, at this point, it seems that the athlon 64 is the better buy. I like to stick with companies I know, so, I will probably always buy Intel...

 that makes little to no sense...if it were something where you couldn't access a large amount of first-hand user comments, i.e., what rubber feet you want for your box (i bet you could still find out about that here :p) then you might want to go w/ the comapny you know...but AMD is just as trustworthy as Intel...

hi all, interesting replies i'm going to go for the AMD system!

i'm still stuck on RAM though, i've been looking at Corsair 512MB PC3200XLPRO
which isnt exactly cheap but it seems to be the cream of the crop, also i would most likely buy a second stick later

or would it make more sense to buy 1GB of lower-end Corsair ram?

what do you all think?

I say go for the XMS and buy a second stick later. In my opinion it is the best. Also, it will run at better timings than the value series, not to mention that it looks way cooler. :D However, since it seems like you are looking for the best performance/value, I would suggest the CMX512-3200XL- unless you really want those lights on the pro series.
