Help for a Mac to PC Convert

and for the same price, wow. Also, is BF3 possible? I love the game, totally forgot about it.

It should play fine, as long as you go for mix of high/mid settings, the GTX670m is a good mobile gpu, if you wish to read more check Notebookcheck NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670M. I think kepler will only have GTX660m (inferior to the GTX670m) and im hopping GTX680m around july, but this is $800 GPU so the 9130 is as good as it gets with in your budget.

So should I go for the 1333 MHz ram for $50 less? What is the likelyhood that I will use/need more?

DDR3 1333 RAM will be just fine. Current Intel CPUs do not benefit that much from higher-speed RAM.

I would take the quad for $70, upgrading the CPU will be more than $200 later... the memory its up to you, there is not much performance gain on 1600mhz, i would probably save it in favor of upgrade the cpu right away or an ssd down the road.

Yeah,I've got the CPU upgrade and Windows OS that brings me up to $1163. What can I upgrade by the way? I mean, what can I upgrade that I would need to upgrade, or should upgrade?

Is an ssd worth it? They're kinda expensive, and I don't know enough about them to know the benefits.

yes, goto slickdeals and grab a 120GB for about $100-120.. best hardware purchase you can do IMHO

Ok, so a Sager NP9130 with the i7-2670QM and 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3/1600 with Windows 7? Sound like a plan?

Sounds good, but next monday ivy bridge mobile quads are going to be available, so i would go with the i7 3610QM, but the difference should be very little.

Sorry for the late reply, but these new Ivy bridge processors will be about how much more?

Ok, so I need some financial backing for this new Sager from my friend. How can I prove to him that this Sager is better than a $1200 Macbook Pro?

Ok, and will this work? In bootcamp I mean. Macbook Pro, 8GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 9400M 256mb. A huge amount of HD space. For Skyrim or JC2?

I know, he doesn't speak in specs. What about functionality? It can run everything, correct? And quickly? Basically, he wants to know that it can be used besides gaming.

No.

Yes and Yes. If it can run games well, it can do other things well.

ok, I know this thread may be long dead, but what do you think of the 2012 Macbook Pro? The $2199 looked pretty good. I linked the tech specs for it, just wondering if it would game at all. Thanks

Waiting to see if you have another dozen of the same questions to ask.

ha, how did this make the leap from "looking for a sub $900 laptop" to "hey that new $2.2k retina macbook pro looks neat" Danny you have some unreal patience for people.

That being said you did mislead him a bit when he asked about Final Cut X, unfortunately that's OSX only so he's either going to need to learn how to use sony vegas or spend the hefty premium for the new pro. Some thing's to consider from someone who owns an old macbook pro as well as a gaming pc.

Bootcamp works perfectly fine but it's a little like buying a swingset only to play in the box. Do swingsets even come in boxes? Anyway the point was your overpaying for something you could have had much cheaper...

You could easily build a desktop pc with the same performance for half the cost.

After a teardown a tech site recently called the new retina MBP the least user servicable laptop ever.

Hope your fine with the limited space of straight SSD because there is no option for a HDD

The new macbook pro is a significant redesign and with all first gen hardware there are bugs, think iphone 4 antennae snafu.

Macbook pros run god dam hot. That retina display (which is only gonna look 10% better at best) requires more battery than ever before and I'm interested to see how they handle it when peoples leg hairs start to catch fire playing D3 on this thing. There gonna need a bigger bumper for sure.

So if you can't live without FInal cut and don't mind paying a hefty premium to stay in the apple ecosystem then go for it. Despite the above list I still do very much like apple despite their crazy markup. And as someone who learned editing on a mac I'm not a real fan of sony vegas. I should aslo mention im writing this all from my 5 year old macbook pro on account of my 7 month old custom built PC began endlessly crashing yesterday. So don't underestimate apples build quality and engineering plus that new pro is real thin and sexy. And my MBP (which isn't thin but is real hot, literally the palmrest is 130 degrees fahrenheit) has been dropped, had beer spilled on it, and been dragged through airports more times then I can remember and it's still humming along.

Edit: come to think of it I did have to actually have it serviced twice. Luckily it was covered. Also I had to replace the battery after 4 years, which is something you won't be able to do with the new super locked down retina MBP. So get applecare. Or get two of those boutique built pc's for the same price and you'll have a spare.

Ok, thanks for the help. I mean, I need to edit and I did learn on final cut, but I would like to game in bootcamp, is it possible to game well with the new MBP's specs? Or should I just for an old gen macbook with hdd and no retina? I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds here.

Look at the dam specs the ability to "game well" is not some intangible thing. If you look at the specs of the pc abula linked above and compare them to the base model of the retina macbook pro you'll see the pc has a better GPU, same amount of ram, and add $70 and it'll have the same cpu as the MBP too. You can even add an SSD in lue of the optical drive if you so choose, seeing as that MBP doesn't have an optical drive anyway.

To put it plainly that Sager pc has better specs for gaming than the MCP has at half the price. The MCP has superfluos things in terms of gaming like retina display, very large SSD, a 720 web cam, and built in wifi w/ no ethernet port. You can add most of those things to that Sager and more if you want them and it would still be much cheaper then the MCP.
