I was installing a new 160 wd hd in my computer with 2 hd's My OS was on a 40gb and an 80gb for all my movies and mp3's and games.All WD cavair drives. I went to install windows on the 160gb and it showed 2 windows xp pro systems when installign XP Pro. I got windows on the 160gb, But my 80gb that had all my music and all my important files on now shows that its not formatted and its shows a FAT32 sys. Before I try anything and possibly mess it up more I want to ask you guys what my best options are for recovering my files. And after this I will start backing up often. Thanks Chris
 
Did you do any of the following (very bad) things?

Delete partitions using the Windows XP Setup Program?
Format any partitions that existed before you got your 160GB drive during setup?

Have you done the following sound troubleshooting practices?
Set your system to all stock frequencies/settings (ie, no overclocking)?
Verified that your RAM is good using MemTest86?
Ensured that your PSU is up to the task for the additional drive?
Used manufacturer diagnostics to verify that your 80GB that had all of your files is still mechanically sound and fit for service?

It is too late to do this now, but when I do a fresh Windows XP install, I only have the intended boot drive connected, and all data backed up before proceeding. The former only takes a minute to do and prevents you from accidentally blowing away partitions with data on them during Setup, the latter is a sound practice for any computer user. You've already acknowledged the value of backups, so I won't hold that point over your head anymore, just repeating it for the benefit of other members :p Post back the answers to the questions and we'll get to the bottom of your problem, and if possible, get your data back.
 
There are unformat utilities for FAT, but not sure about for NTFS.

Wait a second, it can't show FAT if it's unformatted.

I had my 80gb hook'd up when I was installing WinXP on the new 160. But I was reading about a years worth of posts and downloaded Ontrack recovery software and I'm in the process of getting my dada back. I will immmediatly back everthing up as soon as I get it back. Do you think External HD or DVD's are the best back up?
 
ONtrack software SUCKS!!!!!!! I bought the lite edition only to see that you can only recover 25 files at a time~!!!!!! ANd it was 90.00bucks!!!!!!! I will be calling for a refund.!

No, Ontrack's software doesn't suck, your reading skills do since it is clearly listed on their website you can only recover 25 files at a time per session.

There are other lower cost alternatives that will recover your entire HDD for less money than Ontracks Professional software.

GetDataBack for NTFS is $79 and does the whole thing.
