So I purchased a Hitachi 500 gb external drive from BB several weeks ago (b/c it was on sale for 119.99)

so after putting everything on the drive, including picture, programs, tv shows, movies etc (approx. 400+gb worth)...the drive starts to click and now it won't work...

so any cheap data recovery suggestions or is there something I can do myself to get the data off of it?

I'm extremely pissed since the drive is brand new and my maxtor 300gb external has been faithful for 3+ yrs w/ just a case replacement last yr.

Thanks for any insite/helpful suggestions.

You can try unmounting the drive and putting it internally in your case; perhaps the power supply or cooling in the enclosure is bad.

thanks, but unfortunately I only have a laptop =(...

I've read on another thread w/ this same issue, someone suggested putting the drive in the freezer....I'm gonna try and put the entire unit in the freezer, since if I break open the seal (ie. stickers) it will void my warranty and hopefully it will work...

i can hear the hdd spinning, but as the drive spins faster the clicking gets louder & quicker..

thanks for the suggestion, hopefully others will chime in soon :)

well the freezer thing definitely didn't work, if anything...it just made the clicking even louder...

sigh

I'd stay away from that freezer trick, unless it's a bare drive. You're warranty screwed if ya remove the drive, and your data screwed if ya send it in. :(
My only suggestion is, next time "Roll yer own". Then, at the very least, you can remove the drive to work on it.

I normally do "roll my own," but it was a great deal + getting a single drive & enclosure would have actually made it more...

this blows =*(

but noone expects a 2 week old drive to just die
I totally agree, but the problem you have, would have been different if you had purcahsed a roll 'ur own....BUT, it would have cost you $20.00 more....let's refer to the great deal comment.
Get a great deal on a HD, then get a great deal on a case. Then you have a great deal you can troubleshoot.

I'm sure going w/ a roll ur own, the drive can die as well...then I would be in the same boat again...you just have more options to trouble shoot...

and if you are in this thread to "kick someone when their down" then please leave, b/c you haven't really suggested anything helpful, it's obvious that if I did "roll my own" then I would be able to crack the case open w/ out fear of losing my warranty and try to figure out how to recover my data...

Sorry I can't be of anymore help. I'm sure you have been researching this problem and are getting frustrated by coming up empty. There's no, one time easy fix, and the only sure thing is to place it in the hands of a professional.
I understand and sympathize with your frustration. :(
