Help choosing a gaming processor?

So my mind was made up about a X2 3800+ processor cause I like to play games and multitask (Videogames+winamp+firefox, omg i'm such a hardcore tasker) and i thought it rocks but i have been reading on [H] about the Sempron about it's really good for gaming and I just need some information (I tought the Sempron was for computers running servers in other words it's not cool for gaming, I'm very misinformed).
 
Oh I didn't know I'm very misinformed then scratch that.

Do i need Dual core or should i get one core cause i read that future games will use dual cores don't know if there is gonna be a big difference
 
There has been a few discussions about this lately.
Bottom line, it will be a few years before games really take advantage of dual cores.
Unless you're heavily multitasking, better to save your money and get single core.
Videogames+winamp+firefox is probably not heavy enough multitasking to warrant it imo. ;)
If you've got money to burn, there isn't much downside to dual core however. But by the time those cores will come in handy for gaming, your chip will be old and slow anyways and it'll be time to upgrade again.

Not only that, but I found with my x2, the second my computer boots up it responds to anything I request. Always with a single core my computer would take a minute or two to load up all the services before it was actually ready to function. I guess with the dual cores, 1 core is loading services and the 2nd is completely free. Anyways, I find that to be a big plus for me because Im not extremely patient.
 
X2's are the better all around processors. IMHO, if you're going to spend $300 for a processor, get a dual core one. They clock very well also. 2.4Ghz is definitely within reason.
 
If I go single core what would be a good speed for today's and future games?

If a game wants 3 Ghz (P4) what is the equivalent on a AMD?
 
The 3 Ghz equivalent in AMD is the 3000+ ;). But I'd get a 3500+ or 3700+ and OC it if you're going single core, but dual core is the way to go ;).

If you can oc anything at or above 2.4 ghz it seems to be plenty of power for gaming. There is hardly any performance increase in games with a faster chip. Honestly if I had read up a little before upgrading I might have gone with a 3000+ over this Opteron. It is a damn nice chip and OCs like hell but it's really more for bragging rights. I should have spent the extra money for it (I got raped cause I paid for one of the last cabne steppings) on an x1800xt instead of an x1800xl. Even if my cpu only did 2.5-2.6ghz, I'm sure it would give overall better gaming performance than this OptyOWN with my x1800xl. Games are much more GPU than CPU limited it seems.

Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Generally speaking the x9 multiplier on the 3000+ is going to hurt you unless you have a DFI board or something that does a very high HTT. A good middle ground is the 3200+ with x10 multi. That way you only need 240HTT for 2.4Ghz and 250 for 2.5Ghz which might be as far as you get with the E6 chips anyway.
 
if you got the money to spend go for the X2 and OC :D i love mine and youll FIND uses for it trust me theres a few of us here that have done some realy odd things since we got dual core CPUs like riping a dvd to divx and playing a game :D but its nice to beable to do all that system keeping stuff defraging, virus scan regalurly and not thing about it taking up your CPU :D

I can attest to this.. I have found uses for my dual core.. and I will do things just to see how much punishment it can take :D
 
One of the cooler things I can do now is run a dedicated server hosting a game, then join it and have no performance loss at all. Before, I'd have to host (non dedicated) and play on one instance or the game I was playing would hog the cpu from the dedicated server app. This way, if I set my machine settings really high and the framerate drops (which sometimes causes problems for the clients), or for some reason the game crashes on me (or I wreck and want to leave), the other people connected aren't affected. It'll depend on the game, but for the racing sims I usually run it works perfectly.
