i'm gonna be building a computer that will be used for all sorts of useage from general browsing to gaming to who knows, maybe even some experimenting with fruity loops or something. i've never built a nice hifi setup before.

requirements:
headphones mainly, speakers are taking a back seat here. they will be used, but headphones are getting 90% of the time here. also a mic will be needing useage, does that come into the equation? it'll just be for games and vent, but if that maeks a difference.

amp: do i need one? headphones for the most part, and it'll be a single source...

sound card, i've only ever heard of onboad and creative, give me some basics on good cards, or places to start reading up on good cards. this will be going into a conroe era mobo.

budget:
i wanna keep it to about 500 or a grand all told for the audio part of this.

also will streaming stuff off a NAS reduce quality in any way? i don't see how network lossiness would turn into a loss of audio quality, but i might as well check.

thanks much!

really do some amp research, go with the dt 770's, at 900's, or hd 595's, maybe even something better if u can plop a grand or so...... be sure to do some research, im kind of new to audio and dont know a lot about higher end stuff... but if u do gaming get atleast a x-fi fatality, cause its the only card that supports eax (newer versions)....

that is so not true. get any x-fi card for gaming, they all support the same eax. 5 is the highest.

Agreed. I would say there is very very little reason to ever reccomend someone buying the fatal1ty. Maybe soon more games will use the X-Ram then i would look at it again.

They are all headphones, the dt770s and dt900s are beyerdynamics and the HD 595s are sennheisers.

Info on the beyers can be found here:

i wouldn't say headfi is the greatest source for all audio knowledge since i'm fairly certain that you won't encounter any real discussion on something like room accoustics as they arn't really needed when it comes to headphones but in this case it's a good place to look as the op is looking for headphone advice

for 500ish though i'd prob go dt880s and a good amp and maybe a cheap dac to round things off

head-fi.org is the best place he can go to get help with his questions. To the previous poster, I too was in the market for gaming headphones and was bent on getting the dt880. Everybody told me that was a no-no, since it doesn't have the bass slam and power needed for my applications. They were right, as I now have the dt770/80 and love them. To the op, if you're a gamer, the dt770/80 and a900 would be best, as it has great soundstages with excellent bass for explosions and such. If you listen to music more than game, I suggest the hd595, as it is more musically balanced than two former headphones, but doesn't have the amount of bass needed for gaming. There are other, higher end headphones you can buy with your budget, but afaik the dt770/80 and the a900 are the best gaming cans for the price. Everything else(in higher price ranges) is a so-so for gaming, but take musical reproduction to another level.

I've learned all this from head-fi.org =]

well here's how it looks like it's gonna stack up. x-fi to number cruncher dac to amp (gotta figure that out) to hd 770s

that's my exact setup... minus a PPA by MisterX and my new DEQ2496 (which replaced my number cruncher - PURISTS BE DAMNED! :D ). Good choices BTW. :)
