It's the points!
They are worthless and next to arbitrary, yet we are in the constant hunt for more "D" (aka more folding power)

When the SMP client was king of the hill, I bought a C2D that I didn't need. not too long after I bought a PS3 that I didn't need. Then I bought a BE-2400 with a couple 8800gs's that I didn't need. I GIVE away older systems because I can't tell someone they have to keep F@H on it if they paid it.
I keep saying that I'm not going to buy anything just for the sake of folding, but yet folding is always concern #1 when I'm on NewEgg looking.
That's true, but my title did not come from massive "D, being a poor college student just isn't compatible. The highest up the list of team PPD I've ever been is #68, and that was a long time ago.
Having the addiction is not dependent on being able to fund said addiction.

That can change very quickly and easily. At the beginning of 2008 I had an overclocked E6400 and overclocked Athlon64 X2 as my primary machines. I also had a couple P3s and I believe an AthlonXP also running. Not long into 2008 I upgraded my main machine to a Q6600 as I had planned to do and had the E6400 as a backup machine. Then I sold my E6400 and bought a Q6600 to replace it. About a month later I also bought another Q6600 system just for folding.
Sure, the extra quad core systems come in very handy for other things, especially encoding movies and such but they mostly sit and fold. I've also had to shut down all the single core systems and the X2 system was given to my parents as a Christmas present this past year. As it is, the three overclocked quads as well as an 8800GT produce 20k+ PPD. Something to keep in mind is that all of this was purchased prior to the GPU client being released or else I probably could have gotten more PPD for the money.
Anyway, you'll want to spend money for the sake of folding before too long. You can deny it all you want, but you don't need the top of the line quad cores for web browsing and multiple video cards for Minesweeper. If that's how you want to justify it, we're not going to talk you out of it. But we still know the truth.

I think they have medication out now that can help that ...I bought a system for heating the house this last winter

If you are in it for the points then most older hardware isn't worth running due to the cost of the power required and the low return on points. IMHO

Nice to see another Tennessean folding for the team!Some of the other DC projects can make use of older hardware. I'm just not sure what ones.
For the most part if you can Ebay the older stuff and pick up a 50 buck GPU it will do more work than a stack of P3 boxen with less power draw.
I sometimes need to open the windows during the winter, and I live in CanadaI bought a system for heating the house this last winter

Welcome! I know this has been an addiction for me and I've been at it for not even a month. My signs of my addiction that I'll confess:
1) kicking my ATI 4850 to the curb in favor of a GTX 275 just for more points even though the new card is overkill for my 19" monitor
2) OCing the hell out of that card and my CPU for the CC
3) I spent hours messing with Virtual Machines for the CC - trying Ubuntu vs notFred
4) Installed Linux so I can dual boot in it just to light up all my CPU cores. However I did not try WINE to run my GPU client but sure though about it
5) Now I'm looking at my kid's computers and wondering how they'd fold
But hey it's worth it. The research will help the patients I see at work.

I think I've done about 90% of everything you mentioned above, including running the GPU client on my kids computer during the CC last week. He was disappointed that he couldn't play on it the whole week, but was cool with the idea that we were using it to fold on. I bought a system for heating the house this last winter
Actually, this past winter I turned the furnace on in my old apartment a total of three times and the first time was not until January I believe. I just let the computers do the heating until the outdoor temp dropped to well below freezing. I had really nice temps on all the computers too.
