Hi Guys, I'm in the market of a new SLR and this will be my 1st one. My budget would be no more than $1200 with a lense already. Also want Cannon or Nikon only, unless there's other brands that are user friendly than Cannon or Nikon D80. So any input or suggestions would greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Canon XTI or XT, with a good lense, possibly a used 20D or retail they can be found under $1k these days.

canon in the XT range i find hard to beat by nikon just due to canon's lens line up and lower noise on higher ISO's.

Well I have the D80 myself. My suggestion as always go to a camera store and, hold both see which feels best in your hand. That and whcih ones controls you like best. To me a Nikon feels like a womans tit in my hand nice and, natural. :p

Check for gently-used cameras from folks who are upgrading - that's where the deals are.

As was already said go to stores and actually hold the camera. I'm sure if you do this you'll prefer Nikon.

What are you going to use the camera for? Do you see yourself getting really involved and spending lots of $$$?

I would suggest the D50 or D80....if you want to take the camera a lot of places then check out the D40.

The lens is more important than the body IMO, so don't go buy a $900 body and a $300 lens.

I suggest looking a bhphotovideo.com, they have used lenses and used bodies for decent discounts.

Rebel XT body goes for ~$450ish new now
Add a Tamrom 17-50 f/2.8 for another $450, and a Canon 35 f/2 for $240, and you'll be in good shape.

What kind of pitctures do you like to take?

Really, where?
I checked Adorama and B&H, but they're asking $549 ($499 used).
If so, I will lower my price on my FS thread. :)

EDIT: Doh, you mean body only, right?

Ideas on where to buy used DSLR goodies:

bhphotovideo.com
allenscamera.com
PCnation.com
mpex.com

Guide to buying used lenses: LINK

That's a decent start...

fredmiranda.com is also a great place to look for used gear.

Also check out KEH.

But if you buy from me, you have the comfort of knowing that you're buying from a fellow [H] member. :D

I would vote for the D80 I just got one and its my first entry into the DSLR world as well. It is very easy to pick up and learn on.

The top control panel makes it easy to adjust the settings on the fly if you start to go with manual settings over the standard auto functions ( and why would you get a SLR if you DONT plan on going manul haha)

thanks so much guys for the link and tips.. I'll be doing alot of traveling soon with my wife.. so i definitely would like to get a decent SLR camera. Thanks again...

so don't go buy a $900 body and a $300 lens.

the lense means alot but so does the camera, so dont go buying a $300 camera and a $900 lense either... (unless of course is used good camera like an XT)

and is true about the feel, i ditched my rebel and skipped the XT to get the 20D cause it didnt use the plastic cheap body that the XT and XTI seem to have, also the shutter is a solid close sound, not a cheap plasticy sound.

People are buying the new 40D, so I would get a used 20D and Tamron 17-55. That is under your budget. I know someone in my photo forum that is selling a Canon 20D for $600....

I love my rebel XT, but other users who say it feels cheap are kind of right. the addition of the vertical battery grip makes it feel alot better though. without the grip its just too small for me, especially after playing with a 5D at a wedding a few months back :D

a used 20D will give you more features with in the camera vs the Xt* line ups, dont be foolded by 50MP!!!!! , MP only means a larger image you can get over all, most images over 6MP ona quality camera people cant see much difference any more

think of MP as Ghz was to intel now, it is a marketing term now.
