Are the Hec brand of PSU's one of those units we need to stay away from? Just curious since i got the 585W for $22 at directron.com as a spare, and for testing things.

If you guys need me to open this thing up i don't mind, since it was a cheap price.

Link to the psu

It is really silent, but not too heavy, so it is on the cheaper side.

well probably not a 585watt since the company probably rated the PSU @ PEAK LOAD....if that's the case....it's probably a cheapo-depot..but not bad for a "585" watter I guess...the only way to find out is to test it out..

I have tested it with my system, and the rails are very good.

Asus 6800GT, A2, 3 hdds, 2 120mm fans, 3 80mm fans, dvd-rw and a few odds and ends, and it ran stable, the rails were strong and didn't dip below the rated voltage of the rail.

So how did you test it again......on your system? A nice little static load? With what?

You're taking the word 'test' way to seriously. When i said test, i meant simply that, i plugged it in on my system, and used it like normal with no abnormal things occuring.

I also tested it with my multimeter and it came back pretty decent numbers, if you want those numbers, i'd be happy to to test again and write them down.

So in other words you didn't test anything? It appears you took the term test too loosely.
test:
put to the test, as for its quality, or give experimental use to

test·ed, test·ing, tests
v. tr.
To subject to a test; try: tested the pen by scribbling on scrap paper; testing job applicants.

A basis for evaluation or judgment: “A test of democratic government is how Congress and the president work together” (Haynes Johnson).

As i said, you're taking it to seriously.

No I didn't simply becasue outside of your set config I have no idea how this PSU will perform. Withou that the test is no test it is simply an observation or data point. You changed nothing. There were no variables tested.

You are still taking it to seriously.

How do you try a shirt on? You try/test it out to make sure it does what it's suppose to do without anything breaking/ripping.

As i said, the rails are stable, i had no data curruption and no loud bangs or such, so i did indeed test the unit out.

If i did what you were implying i need to do, i would of specified that when i first started this post by stating: "I cracked this unit open and gave it a beating"

But all i stated was that i tested it on MY system and nothing further. you are putting words in my mouth.

My shirt won't ruin 2,00+ dollars worth of other things I have bought......or more importantly 2,000+ dollars worth of stuff a customer has bough tthat I ma going ot have to hear about. Hmmmm......k?

I am sorry that you do not understand the scientific method. What you did was simply step one:

1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena.

You missed the remaining:

2. Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena. In physics, the hypothesis often takes the form of a causal mechanism or a mathematical relation.

3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations.

4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments.

You are indeed correct i did none of those things, I never said i did, and you keep on implying that i have for some reason.

How about you stop acting like a guy that knows all, and start providing help, if you won't, then stop commenting in my post's.

$2.00 and $2.000, for knowing everything, i'd think you know how to write those out correctly.

You may want to reread your posts.

I did provide help I pointed out that the methodology and testimonial you were expousing was in fact flawed. That helps people keep from making a decision before the facts are in and the PSU is tested.

2,000 dollars is correct. It is not as common a usage but it is correct.

ook chill guys...the psu does what he wants it to do and it works, so end of argument :)

There has been some trivial discussion about the 585watt HEC Orion in this thread.

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=891640&page=1&pp=20&highlight=hec+orion

AFAIK, HEC used to be a quality PSU brand. I know that some of their PSUs were either made for Antec or sourced from the same PSUs sold as some Antec models. My HEC 350watt = Antec PP352x.

The extremely low price of the Orion series as opposed to their other models has me very skeptical. When did you get yours from Directron? I have been wanting to get one just out of curiosity but they have been sold out for some time.

I got mine about 2months ago or so. If you like, i can open it up and take a picture of the inside.

I don't mind voiding the warranty since it didn't cost me much.

DO NOT BUY A POWERSUPPLY FROM ORION!

Is that through your skull?

When I built my brother's rig back in October he chose a NZXT Guardian case and I took a gamble on using a powersupply from a brand I have never heard of. I built it, everything was set... untill I powered it on for the first time.

There was a large spark with a big bang. I then tested the PSU, and it didn't work (duh.) I then opened that baby up and to not much surprise, most of the components had been blown.

I then through another powersupply into my brother's system, knowing that the most probable cause of the accident was caused by the PSU. I made sure the PSU I put in was of quality (Antec TruePower I 400w) and that baby powered up.

The psu is an HEC Orion, a company with a good track record, not sure how they are now though. i'd dare say it's 5X better than whatevers in the guardian case ;). Unless i've understood wrong, and that you purchased an HEC orion seperately? Not all orion's are cast from the same mold either btw, the lower wattage orion's seem to be built entirely different.

I got the hec585 from directron as well, works well, lots of juice and plenty quiet.

Ewww.

No wonder the Orion series is so cheap when compared to the other HEC units.

I should be getting this on Wed. Apparently they oversold the units and are now shipping out back orders from 2 months ago. Apparently other users here have liked their units so we'll see how it turns out. I'll try to get some pics up but I can only test it with a multimeter and fake software loading which doesn't count for much.

personally i think directron was just trying to get rid of them. They were probably yanked out of cases, or bought as company overstock, then dumped for a small quick profit. Pretty sure they were all oem.

For $22, it would be interesting to have one to look at. HEC has literally fallen off the map.

yea i wouldn't worry too too much***, as that orion that blew up was the 400w version, with totally different specs, tolerances & features, i'm almost willing to bet it's an entirely different psu then the 485D and 585D. Most psu brands have their share of horror stories, except the ones that cost well over $100 (it seems).

*** as long as you don't plan on a fully-decked SLI rig with dual-core athlons etc etc etc, you get the picture ;) .

This is what it says on the PCB:
B1 - ###arpxo
DCO-0103-08
HEC-###AR-TX/PTX

Not sure if thats what i should be looking for.
